Get students to speak French by having them look at images. You ask them questions about what they see and they respond, or have them work in small groups and have their own conversations about the images. These ten themes are adaptable to any level. This is an easy to play 30 minute dice game to practice the French verbs: LIRE - DIRE - ÉCRIRE - RIRE - DÉCRIRE - CONDUIRE. I have included six different versions of this game in six tenses: present, passé composé, imperfect, simple future, conditional and present subjunctive. You can use this game with beginners and advanced students alike. Just choose the tenses you want to work with, et voilà! My high school students love this game, and it can get very competitive if you decide to play it as a race (details are explained with the activity). Students divide up into teams and play a dice game, the dice determining which subject and infinitive to conjugate in the tense indicated. Looking for something interesting to do with your students after winter break? Before starting a new lesson I like to have students talk about what they did during the holidays. Here are 20 task cards with questions about winter break and the holidays that students can either ask each other or individually write down the answers to. Work on these as a class or break students up into small groups to work on them, sharing their most interesting answers with the class as a follow up activity. I have also used these task cards in the language lab with the phone option. Print and cut out the cards and have students "call" other students to ask each other questions. Your students are going to learn a lot with this lesson, and it will have them speaking to each other in no time. This lesson can easily be used with beginners, intermediate, or advanced learners. You can adapt it to every level. Beginners should at least know the verbs être and avoir and some very basic vocabulary. More advanced students can go far, as there are many possibilities. Activity 1 Practice making conversation during a phone call from your friend, Luc. He will ask you to come to his party. Your lines are fairly open-ended, but they must correspond to what he says next, so watch out! Activity 2 Before moving on to the second part of this speaking activity, let’s review some of the most common professions. You can practice this new vocabulary by clicking on the link above which will bring you to a set of review exercises on Quizlet. This document contains a list of professions in English and French, then there's another part with only the French word and an image. All of the images correspond to the images found within the Quizlet study set. After reviewing the professions vocabulary, proceed to the next page where you will see a picture of 11 different people, all with different professions. Activity 3 Tout d’abord, comment s’appellent ces gens, quel âge ont-ils, et quelles sont leurs professions? Have a look at the people in this picture. Use your imagination to determine what their professions are (you may not have the same ideas as others, and that’s ok). Once you’ve determined their professions, tell us what their names are, and how old they are. Again, use your imagination, and try to come up with some French names! Look just below the picture to see an example, then complete the exercise by providing the same information for the other 10 people in the picture (left to right). Activity 4 Now let’s imagine we’re at a party (une soirée). It’s time to make polite conversation (ce qui peut être difficile, mais nous sommes très polis, et intéressants!) Let’s imagine that all of the people in the picture above are at the party, but they don’t know each other. It’s time to make small talk (faire des rencontres et des échanges), en français! Activity 5 Randomly choose two people from the picture above. You’ve already established their names, ages, and professions. The objective here is to have two people who don’t know each other make small talk. You will be practicing your conversation skills, which are: starting a conversation, continuing a conversation, and ending a conversation.

This lesson has it all: video lesson, lesson in written form with examples, exercises, and a really fun activity to try out with your students. This lesson is all about how to add meaningful question words to simple questions in French so that you will get more than a "yes" or "no" answer. Your students will learn how to use the question words: qui, quoi, que, quel, quand, où, pourquoi, comment, and combien (de). This lesson includes a video, so it can easily be assigned as homework, and you can save precious class time for the fun stuff! Students will learn the rules for knowing where to place the question word in the sentence depending on the type of question they've decided to ask. If you have been reviewing verb tenses with your more advanced students, you're going to appreciate this worksheet! 9 tenses are represented in this worksheet, presented by Love Learning Languages: présent, passé composé, imparfait, futur simple, futur antérieur, plus-que-parfait, subjonctif, conditionnel, conditionnel passé. There are 20 sentences to complete. The correct verb tense and infinitive are in parentheses. This quiz is to assess written formation of the different tenses, and not necessarily when to use each of them. However, once your students have taken the quiz, you have an excellent opportunity to go over the answers together, and to explain why each tense was chosen for that particular setting.

Looking for a great activity for intermediate level learners of French? This is a lesson that covers reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It’s a fun way to introduce your students to French poetry, and though the poem is spectacularly well known in France, it’s easy to understand. Students will learn new vocabulary, and practice the passé composé. Included in this lesson: Watch a 3 minute silent short film with your students (YouTube link provided). The court-métrage is a very well done acting out of the poem. Students write what they think the poem is about after having watched the short movie, and they identify the feelings they felt. At this point you can encourage students to share with the class. Before reading the poem there is some new vocabulary to learn. Important vocabulary from the poem is introduced in a multiple choice activity, and after that I’ve included a flashcard set on Quizlet for you to share with your students so that they can revise (link provided). At this point, there’s a link to another YouTube video to show your students. Again, the poem is being acted out, but this time with the poem being read at the same time. Students will have a much better understanding of what the poem is about at this point. The next part of the lesson is to practice the passé composé, since that’s the tense that’s used throughout the poem. Students will fill in the blanks with the passé composé form of the verb in parentheses. Regular, irregular, and reflexive verbs. After you’ve gone over the answers with your students, there’s a reading exercise that could be done either in the classroom with a partner, or even better, in the language lab where students could record themselves reading the poem aloud. At this point, you could offer bonus points for students who want to memorize and recite the poem.

This product includes a support guide to teaching and learning the French past conditional as well as a 5 part translation exercise with answers included. The translations are from English to French and they involve using the present and past conditional as well as other grammar points and verb tenses that students at this level should be comfortable with. In this lesson I pay special attention to how to say "would have been", "could have been" and "should have been" in French. We teachers know that learning the French past conditional isn't so difficult once you know how to form the passé composé, but our students often need lots of examples and exercises to help them see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I love the verbs devoir, vouloir, and pouvoir. Once your students know these, they'll be speaking in full sentences in no time, and that's very motivating. It's always a good idea to have lots of exercises on hand for practice, and for exposure to new vocabulary. This is a 40 question exercise on the French subjunctive. In this exercise students must indicate whether they should use the subjunctive or the indicative before filling in the blanks with the correct form of the verb in parentheses. Formation of the French subjunctive is the easy part. Learning how and when to use it correctly is when it gets a little tricky for our students. This is an activity on giving advice, suggestions and opinions using the French subjunctive. Included you will find fourteen different situations to which your students will have to respond by either making a suggestion, giving your opinion, or giving advice of some kind. Students will use the provided list of 24 expressions that must be followed by the French subjunctive to help them get started. 3 sample responses are provided for each of the 14 situations (to be used at your discretion, possible responses are provided in the answer section and the original is left open for students to use).
