Great as a starter activity for new LCAs getting stuck into the ‘Identity’ Module. Start with a discussion of where we come from, in the broadest sense. Discuss how important where and what we come from is to people’s sense of who they are. Read the original poem by Mary Pipher together. Share the template for students to now write their own version, following the prompts in brackets. Enjoy!

Huge DICKINSON POETRY BUNDLE! including colour-coded templates of Emily Dickinson's poems, notes etc

These colour-coded templates help students to brainstorm ideas about particular aspects of poems, following a predictable pattern - title, plot, mood/genre, speaker, structure, theme, language and poetic techniques, overall meaning, my personal response. Once the template has been filled in, and groups or pairs fed back to the main class (and added in further notes if necessary), the sheets become excellent resources for a) extended writing about poems and b) revision. They greatly support pair- and group-work and help unlock some what students consider the most difficult types of texts, and hence the ones they least enjoy. As well as the templates there are examples of completed templates plus extra notes on the poems as well as typical exam Qs at LC (O) level.
