A 762-word model essay in response to the AQA A-level French Paper 2 question on Faiza Guene’s Kiffe Kiffe Demain with the title “Analysez les rapports entre les personnages féminins et les personnages masculins dans ce roman.”
The model essay is accompanied by 6 exercises, including a synonym finder task, a grammar gap-fill based on adjectival agreement, a verb formation gap-fill task, a diamond 9 speaking task based on relationships between characters, an English summary task to show understanding of model essay’s structure and content (Point-Evidence-Evaluation) and the final task which requires pupils to choose the relationships they wish to analyse and to offer their thoughts to each one.
This resource could be used over the course of 2 lessons and serves as an excellent model to support less confident pupils, but also contains a wealth of vocabulary and structures in order to inspire the more able.
PowerPoint presentation and supporting resource which introduces the main themes of La Haine. By this stage, pupils will already have built up a knowledge of the plot/storyline. Activities include a short translation starter, a match-up task which can be done in small groups, diamond 9 speaking task, a reading comprehension match-up task requiring students to match examples of specific events in film to specific themes, a synonym finder task, a short writing task to pen own examples from film and matching them to specific themes covered and a speaking task plenary to get pupils thinking about the importance and representation of the themes, as well as the director’s intentions.
This is a list of generic essay phrases that I have used in my many model essays on La Haine which I give to my students at the start of the year and encourage them to use when writing their own essays on the film.
In this way, students are "trained" to write their essays in a structured fashion, following the Point-Evidence-Evaluation model. I call this the bones of the essay, and the meat on those bones comes from their own planning and ideas.
I also encourage my pupils to add to this list should they come across any expressions that they like/use that aren't already on the list.
Although students obviously aren't allowed any aid in the exam with them, by the final exam, some of these phrases will be embedded in their work by force of repetition. Students will naturally develop "favourites" and provided that these are used in the correct context, it will enable them to focus more on the content, i.e. gaining more marks for the critical analysis of the ideas they put forward.
This is an extensive 1043-word model response to the A-level French Paper 2 question on Kiffe Kiffe Demain « Ce livre présente surtout une image optimiste de la vie en banlieue parisienne. » Dans quelle mesure êtes-vous d’accord avec ce jugement ?
The document also contains activities aimed at exploiting the model essay, including a phrase finder task for useful generic essay structures, a match-up synonym task of words/expressions found in the essay, a French > English translation task and a summary task which will require students to summarise what they understand from each of the paragraphs in the main body of the essay in English following the point, evidence and personal evaluation rationale in terms of structure. This template then serves as a basis for students to commence their own plan to attempt the same essay question.
A PowerPoint and supporting Word document which will provide at least one lesson aimed at improving student's knowledge of the plot and order of events in La Haine, which is so often rusty even after viewing the film for the first few times.
Tasks include matching summaries of key events to clips from the film, ordering events that take place in the film and writing a short summary against the clock to present verbally in pairs/to class. Key/tricky vocabulary in the summaries have also been highlighted, and pupils can be encouraged to use the context of what they have already understood and asked to build an understanding of these expressions.
A 31-slide PowerPoint which includes at least 3 lessons worth of materials and activities enabling pupils to build a greater knowledge of the general, social, cinematographic and biographical contexts of the film La Haine by Mathieu Kassovitz.
Activities include timed gap-fill tasks, reading comprehension tasks, grammar tasks, speaking tasks, research-based 70-word reading summary tasks and translation tasks.
A 34 slide PowerPoint with at least 4 lessons worth of activities for students to become more familiar with the novel Kiffe Kiffe Demain by Faïza Guène, specifically the context and the storyline of the work.
The lessons based around the book's context include activities on the author herself, as well as it's literary milieu as a celebrated piece of littérature beur. There is also a lesson based around gaining a greater understanding of the history of immigration in France .
The storyline lessons build knowledge of the key events in the book, culminating in a task requiring pupils to match summary titles to each "chapter" from the book, complete with page number references. This will enable pupils to build a useful table to refer back to, when looking for evidence of particular aspects of the storyline when writing A-level essays.
The PowerPoint includes gap-fill tasks, reading and listening comprehension tasks, summary tasks, phrase finder tasks, as well as translation and grammar activities, with answers to facilitate self- and peer assessment of activities.
A 783-word model written response to the new AQA A-level French 7652 Paper 2 question "Faïza Guène présente Kiffe kiffe demain comme un journal. Comment est-ce que cela affecte la façon dont l’histoire est présentée ?"
The response is followed by a comprehensive vocabulary list which will enable pupils of all levels to access the model response.
Pupils can use the model response to identify point, evidence and personal evaluation in each main paragraph, as well as to draw out useful generic essay language which they can in turn use in their own work.
A comprehensive 926-word model essay on the new AQA AS French Paper 2 writing title on La Haine "Examinez les similarités et les différences entre Saïd, Vinz et Hubert dans La Haine." The essay covers every one of the suggested bulletpoints and can be exploited in a variety of ways, and also includes a vocabulary list with key expressions and vocabulary used throughout the essay.
1) A-LEVEL FRENCH La Haine French Model Essay - Main themes of film director and reaction
My response to the A-level essay question Analysez les principaux thèmes ou les principales idées du metteur en scène que vous avez étudié. Comment avez-vous réagi à ces thèmes ou à ces idées ? which is relevant for either the legacy or the new-style A-level courses. This is a great model resource to discuss the importance of structure and to access for vocabulary and essay-writing phrases. We discuss the importance of the PEE model (Point-Evidence-Evaluation) and sometimes get pupils to do group work whereby each group evaluates a paragraph and explains PEE in each to other groups. ***NOW INCLUDES ASSOCIATED EXERCISES FOR PUPILS, INCLUDING PHRASE-FINDER AND TRANSLATION OF EXPRESSIONS WITHIN ESSAY***
"I think this essay will be helpful to any students struggling to get to grips with the demands of the challenge of writing a target language essay on a cultural topic. It would serve as a sound model for how to structure a sufficiently well-argued response, and demonstrates effectively how details should be adduced to explain and justify the points raised."
2) A2 FRENCH La Haine A2 Model Essay - Points positifs et aspects qu'on pourrait critiquer + exercises
A model essay on La Haine for the A2 French cultural studies essay writing question "Quels aspects de l’œuvre du metteur en scène que vous avez etudié est-ce que vous trouvez plutôt positifs ? Est-ce qu’il y a des aspects de l’œuvre que vous critiqueriez ? Expliquez pourquoi."
This resource includes a 732-word model essay with a variety of points, vocabulary and grammatical structures and also 3 exercises for pupils to complete, including a vocabulary finder task, a reading comprehension and target language response task, and a third task which invites pupils to think of further positives and criticisms of La Haine.
3) La Haine A2 FRENCH Model Essay - Le facteur le plus important pour le succès du film
Another model essay in response to an A2 essay writing question from the AQA FREN3 June 2013 Q14b. This can be accessed in a variety of ways in order to help pupils make progress with their essay writing.
4) La Haine A2 Model Essay - How does the film's director seek to provoke strong emotions among viewers
A model A2 French essay on the film La Haine and on how Kassovitz seeks to provoke strong emotions among viewers.
5) La Haine A2 Model Essay - Influences of director
An exemplar model A2 French essay I wrote on the film La Haine about the influences of the film's director Mathieu Kassovitz. It has a few comprehension exercises thereafter.
5* "Thank you very much for this essay. I really like the exercises at the end too." Mlle Pierre
5* "Excellent - very useful resource. I am not teaching La Haine but it has still provided some valuable inspiration to help support my students on the film we are studying" afyvvmc
6) La Haine A2 Model Essay - To what extent does originality play a role in the film's success
A model A2 French essay on the film La Haine. Pupils could be asked to pick out key vocabulary, identify structures used, adapt ideas or even pick out key points made, evidence presented or evaluation made.

A 580-word model essay response to the new AQA AS Paper 2 essay writing question "Welche Bedeutung hat das Koma der Mutter für die Familie Kerner? Inwiefern ist es symbolisch wichtig?" The essay also has a comprehensive vocabulary list of words and expressions used throughout the essay. This essay can be exploited in a variety of ways, including asking pupils to highlight the point, evidence and evaluation sections of each paragraph, removing expressions or specific vocabulary and asking pupils to fill in the gaps (this can be tailored to the needs of the class), summarising key ideas in English. I also ask pupils to assess it according to the new AQA marks scheme to help to familiarise them with the new marks and how they are obtained.
My own model response to the new-style AQA A-level Paper2 question "Wie ändert sich das Leben für Alex nach dem Fall der Mauer? Inwiefern wird alles besser für ihn?". The essay also includes a comprehensive vocabulary list which has been drawn from the essay itself. Many of these phrases and expressions are generic and could be used for other essays.
The essay can be accessed in many ways, including:
- Asking pupils to highlight the Point, Evidence and Evaluation in each of the main body's paragraphs. They could summarise these in English which is a useful precursor from them to write their own plan in English following the Point, Evidence and Evaluation model.
- Highlighting certain sections, phrases or passages for translation to consolidate on grammar structures which may have already been taught.
- Asking pupils to read the essay and then consulting the mark scheme they could give the essay a mark and then justify why they chose the mark when discussing with peers. This would help to familiarise pupils with what is needed in order to score the higher marks.
I hope you find this resource useful!
Paul
A 619-word model A-level essay response to the question "Welche Aspekte der Arbeit des von Ihnen gewählten Regisseurs finden Sie besonders interessant? Erklären Sie warum." which can be used for preparation for either the legacy or new specification writing paper, given the fact that it is full of useful vocabulary, idioms and ideas. There are some tasks for pupils to work through, including identifying the point, evidence and analysis sections of the main body to highlight the need for clear structure, translating expressions in bold in essay into English, a comprehensive vocabulary list from essay which can be set as homework, and a Point-Evidence-Analysis grid for pupils to complete. At our centre, we encourage pupils to plan the essay in brief English phrases as it is much quicker than in the target language, and then carefully work ideas into the target language when completing the essay itself. The grid could be used in two ways, either by using the model essay as a reading comprehension and getting pupils to note PEE in English, or getting them to discuss and note down their own PEE plan. This could then be presented to class and constructive feedback given or it could lead to further discussion of ideas among peers.
36 questions on Le Silence de La Mer set out in 6 categories; Analysis & literary comparisons, characters, story & context, intentions of the author, personal reaction and themes in the form of a dice game.
Pupils work in pairs and require a dice and a copy of the A2 speaking marks scheme along with this list of questions. Pupils take it in turn to roll the dice twice, once to determine the category and a second time to determine the question to answer. The other pupil uses the A2 mark scheme to rate their partner on a pre-determined aspect of the marks scheme (i.e. fluency, interaction, pronunciation) and awards a mark for each questions response.
At the end of the task, pupils award each other an overall accuracy mark. This acts as a sort of tie-breaker!
This task gets pupils talking and enables them to gain a better understanding of the marks scheme.
A self-made PowerPoint on adjectives and adjectival agreements. Includes regular and irregular adjectives, as well as various adjectival patterns and adjectives which change meaning depending on whether they come before and after the noun. Includes examples of each as well as exercises on certain slides. Slides also make a useful handout for pupils.
The accompanying word document is a list of useful adjectives to describe personality which can be used as an extension to PowerPoint in getting pupils to agree adjectives to describe someone in their family or a friend.
A self-made PowerPoint on Negative Constructions covering ne...pas, ne…guère, ne…jamais, ne…plus, ne…que, ne…personne and ne…rien. It includes examples and explanations of how each one works and has a translation exercise at the end to incorporate ideas presented in previous slides. The slides make a useful handout for students.
A model response I wrote for my AS German group in response to the Jan 2012 AQA GERM1 Q12 writing question "Warum gibt es oft Konflikte zwischen den Generationen? Wie kann man solche
Konflikte lösen?". I asked pupils to read this firstly and look up and annotate any unknown vocabulary, before ticking separate points which were relevant to either part of the essay title. This enabled pupils to see the number of points being made relevant to title. Then I asked them to look at the various grammatical structures I used and you may wish to go as far as getting the AS German grammar spec and ticking off what is covered in essay.
Le Silence de la Mer Questions & Ideas - Some exemplar speaking questions based around the story chapter by chapter with model answers.
Le Silence de la Mer Discussion webs - Pupils read the statement in the middle and then to skim through novel to find relevant quotes or section to back up statement. E.g. "Werner aime le silence"
Commentez le rôle de l’oncle et son importance dans « le Silence de la Mer » - Model plan in English to respond to an A2 essay writing question.
LE SILENCE DE LA MER Questions for entire novel: Questions with gaps for pupils to jot down their own answers for subsequent discussion in class. This allows a structured step-by-step approach to covering the Guided Study Topic.
Model essay in response to AQA FREN1 past paper question from the January 2013 paper: "A votre avis, quels sont les aspects positifs et négatifs d’être une célébrité?" As many of my students continue to translate their root ideas that they have in English literally word for word, we looked at how to "keep it simple", i.e. using vocabulary and structures that were within the realms of their knowledge.
This essay can serve as a useful model, and can be used to ask pupils to identify grammatical structures they recognise.
Another useful exercise is to ask pupils to read through the essay and to tick every relevant point made in relation to the title.
