I use these activities when teaching adult absolute beginners in spreadsheets. There is data input and simple formulae inputting and alteration and they are useful as extra resources for those that are getting well ahead or for just getting them to do the same tasks until they are comfortable.

These are articles from various online sites that I use in class on Equality and Diversity issues. I use them to lighten the mood, make the topic come to life a little and get people talking.

EMPLOYABILITY HRM role play

Use this when teaching employability to adults. They receive the applications to sort thru as if they were a recruitment panel choosing who to interview. They are asked to say who they have invited why & who they didn’t invite é why. They see their application process through others eyes. The applications are for retail but the message is true for all job roles STEP1 split the class into teams. In groups read é deconstruct job ad é description STEP2 Same groups choose who they will call for interview STEP3 Compare the teams who they have rejected é why é who called for interview é why

I use this exercise when starting in Excel. The students have normally done Word already so are familiar with the formatting toolbar. I then go on with this to practice inserting and deleting rows and columns in different ways (so they can see when eyes and noses disappear) We also do drag and drop – turning our face into a jigsaw by dragging out the features and then dragging them back. You can also go on to working with the format cell menus to add borders for glasses, or a moustache … Hope you have fun with this.

This is a sample test only. The students task is to prepare a circular letter giving notice about an upcoming annual general meeting of a club. In the test they are asked to modify the letter, to apply various formatting actions to it; and to carry out a mail merge operation so that the circular can be delivered to all the members of the club. It should take no longer than 45 minutes

These are articles from various newspapers that I use when starting a class on Equality and Diversity issues. It is interesting to print them out, get them in the middle of the table and get everyone to read them and discuss. I then pose questions like, why do you think that newspaper published that article? Who do you believe in the story? Can you always trust what you read? Is there another side of the story?

This is a mock test that I use with adult students. It is from an older version of ECDL but the word processing tasks are still relevant to those learning the fuctions availble within Word.
