This lesson looks at a range of key events that impacted the population growth in Britain, 1750-1900. Students discuss key factors, select and priorities evidence before completing a teaching poster for 3 factors or events that affected population growth during the Industrial Revolution. The final lesson in our Norman Conquest unit of work. Students begin by recapping the changes/ events that took place after the Battle of Hastings e.g. construction of castles. They are then introduced to Aldred who, fearing Norman rule, fled Britain, but only to return some 20 years later. Students examine the changes that took place in this time and decide which changes were most significant before writing a letter to Alrded explaining what has happened since his departure and what to expect upon his return.

Students learn about the Harrying of the North through analysing a range of sources, from videos, illustrations and written accounts. They create a mind map to show the features before writing a speech to stir up support against William due to his actions. Step by step guide included.

Students learn about the work of John Snow who used a dot map to determine that cholera was spread by water. Students complete a quick mapping activity, extract examples/ information from a video clip, and produce a newspaper article about the events in 1854. As always there are clear step by step instructions and differentiated activities throughout.

This is a 19 page teaching booklet for the French Revolution Unit of Work. The booklet includes a range of worksheets and activities, such as card sorts, the storming of the Bastille newspaper writing activitiy, source activities, decision-making tasks, worksheets and information sheets. The booklet includes enough material for 6 lessons and is aimed at Key Stage 3 (USA ages 11-14). The activities cover the key areas of the French Revolution, for example the causes, key events, interpretations and its impacts on human rights and modern day implications. The booklet contains a range of student-led resources on many aspects of the British empire, for example a never heard the word task, key word quiz, mapping out the British empire between 1750-1901, decision-making tasks about how the British empire impacted the world (with extended response questions which develop examination and writing skills, the British empire in India (with some fun and creative activities, such as creating a stamp, categorising & prioritising tasks and a range of source based tasks. The booklet amounts to around 6 -7 one hour lessons and is ideal for independent homework, cover lessons or can be used to teach a complete unit of work on the British empire.

Handy structure strips that cover all the different types of questions (Edexcel GCSE 9-1, Paper 2 ). I use these for the Superpower Relations and Cold War Unit. They are very useful when preparing students for exam preparation, assessments and writing up questions in lessons. The students also use these to make their own structure strips for revision.I cut out the literacy support and stick this to the reverse of the strip for students to use when they need help with introducing evidence/ examples and phrases for explaining. Students learn about the key differences between capitalism and communism through a debate style activity. They then plot the key countries that followed each system on a world map before recapping their knowledge in a plenary. As always there are clear instructions and high-quality resources.

A lesson looking at the political threats faced by the Weimar Republic in the years 1919-1923. Students begin by completing a survey about what makes someone left or right wing and assessing their own political beliefs. They then look at the main political parties and link these to a range of potential voters in 1918-1929 Germany. They also attempt to try to work out why different groups would be unhappy with the new government. They develop their understanding of the situation by analysing two uprisings (Spartacist and Kapp Putsch) and complete a matrix before assessing what the wider significance of both events had on Germany and how it affected the Weimar Constitution.

A lesson on the growth of highway robbery, poaching and smuggling and then the eventual decline of these crimes. Students work through a range of activities such as card sorts, prioritising information before they complete a matrix exercise and respond to a 12 mark exam question using the lesson’s knowledge and skills to explain how crimes increased and subsequently decreased in the period 1700-1900. A key term grid with all the key vocabulary for the period 1700-1900 is included.

A lesson which looks at Africa in the 18th century. The students are asked to consider their view on Africa in 1700 by creating an instagram update, before analysing, categorising and annotating sources. They use the data to write a report using GCSE skills and finish the lesson by challenging their earlier opinion.
