This is a set of 5 engaging Equations Codebreaker worksheets where pupils need to solve the equations (including some negative answers), and fill in the grids below with the correct letters to find the hidden messages/joke punchlines. The hidden messages should read as follows: One Step Equations - “He stole the queens hat” Two Step Equations - “Chocolate ice cream sandwiches” Two Step Equations with Fractions - “It grew square roots” Equations with Brackets - “The Thief was Prince Harry!” Equations with unknowns on both sides - “Because it had so many problems” These resources are also available individually from my page.

Fun and engaging class game based on the old TV show Blockbusters, with questions on expanding single brackets. These range from fairly basic ones, to questions including negative multiplication and multiplying variable by variable. Split the class into two teams, blue and white. The blue team must try to create a connected blue line from left to right, the white team must try to do the same from top to bottom. Click on the letters to link to the questions, if the answering team gets it right then click “Game board” to get back to the start, and click on the appropriate colour for that team to turn the tile blue or white.

A worksheet of fractions to simplify where the questions change only slightly each time. Two sheets per slide, designed to be cut down to A5. The purpose of this is for pupils to start looking at (facilitated as needed by the teacher) the patterns from question to question and start predicting the answers based on the change in the question rather than just working it out as normal. Includes mixed numbers, improper fractions, simplifying to whole numbers and a few slightly algebraic ones. Answers included.

A complete lesson plan on Mode, Median and Range. The lesson begins with a prior knowledge check, then goes through each skill, with complete example-problem pairs (pupils are shown an example and complete a question themselves). After these examples there are questions on each skill, with answers provided. These start with some minimally different questions, allowing pupils to focus on what is changing from one question to the next - the idea being to draw attention to the changes and hopefully predict the next answer. These are followed by some standard skill questions, and then a reasoning section. The answers for the minimally different questions will appear before going to the next slide (which will also display the standard questions, alongside the reasoning questions) , so you may have pupils self assess these before moving on to the reasoning questions. After the practice for the median is completed there is an Always, Sometimes, Never task, followed by a mixed exercise for further practice. Again, answers are provided.

Two bingo activities based on addition and subtraction. These bingo games are always popular and have regularly engaged my pupils in lessons, and they have often requested that we do them again. Pupils can either draw a 3 x 3 grid in their book, or you can print off some of the blank grids at the start if the powerpoints. They then fill their grid with a selection of the bingo question answers. Can play for both a line and a full house to extend the game or keep pupils interested if their questions aren't coming up often.

Two squares of a 4 x 4 grid will be revealed on each slide, showing a question. Pupils have to draw the grid and complete it with the correct answers in each square. These resources engage pupils as they need to pay careful attention to see which answer goes where, and so they are settled, ready for the lesson ahead - this activity is ideal for low ability pupils as it gives them an activity they can access right at the start of the lesson. You could also use post-its or counters for this. First pupil (or pair) to get a line of 4 correct answers wins!

Engaging worksheet activity focused on written multiplication up to three digit by three digit. Pupils must answer the questions on each sheet and follow the answers to find the correct route through the maze! Answers are included in the document. Publisher and PDF files included for ease of use.

Connect four game for pupils to do in pairs or groups of four (with two teams of two pupils). In my experience the activity works best when the board is laminated and pupils can use whiteboard markers. Pupils take it in turns to try and answer a question, and are peer assessed by the other team. If they get it correct they can put their initials over the space, and the goal is to get four squares in a row. The pupils could also used colour post it's or counters.

Three times tables bingo games based in Powerpoint. Pupils pick 9 numbers out of the possible answers and place them in a 3 x 3 grid - these can either be drawn by the pupils themselves or some blank ones are provided on the first slide. First one includes only 1-5 times tables, the second has various questions from the 2-8 and the third contains questions from the 2 to 10 times tables. Can easily be reused just by swapping the order of the slides in the presentation.

A simple and easy to use cross number worksheet to help pupils practice converting numbers from words into figures. Pupils will strongly engage with this activity as it can add some interest and competition to a relatively dry topic.

Differentiated sheet in three levels for multiplication by grid method. Red section: Grids set out for pupils to finish off Orange section: Pupils must set up the grids themselves Green section: Worded problems building up to some more difficult multi step problems. Pupils can choose which level to start on, and move up when they feel ready. The teacher should also move around the room and make sure pupils are challenging themselves appropriately.

Whole class activity which covers division. This activity is excellent for differentiation as it allows for pupils to choose their own level of question and progress to the next difficulty at their own speed. It also encourages pupils to work together independently to solve their difficulties instead of instantly relying on the teacher. I have used it many times with my classes and it has proved to be a highly engaging resource for pupils. Instructions: - Print off the card sets on red, amber and green card respectively and place each set of cards somewhere in the room (keeping the same colours together). - All pupils start on a red card. - Pupils attempt the question on their card writing their answer and their initials on the back. - Pupils fetch another card and repeat. - If pupils pick a card that has been completed, they check the answer. If they come to the same answer they add their initials to the back. If they disagree they find the original pupil and discuss the question together. - Pupils move up to the next level of difficulty when they feel they are ready. Red Cards: Division with no carrying remainders required Amber Cards: Division, answers are whole numbers, involves carrying remainders. Green Cards: Division, decimal answers.
