Staff Notation Introducing Music to Year 7

In this download pack, you get a structured 4-page worksheet with 8 separate activities -only one of which is teacher-marked, the rest is student-marked via the Answer Slides included on the 18-slide PowerPoint Presentation, which takes you through the entire structure of the project. If you have 100 minute lessons, you will be just shy of 2 full lessons here - if you have 60-minute lessons, you’ll have 3 full lessons including the assessment and DIT sheet. This unit teaches both Bass and Treble Clef notation (not including rests). The worksheet includes both practical and theory tasks - a right-hand study at keyboard of Ode to Joy, and a left-hand study of the Oompa Loompa Song, for Treble and Bass clef respectively. This allows the theoretical learning to sink in through practical studies. For students who are low ability or who have special needs, there is a full Low- Ability Access pack with alternative worksheet, answers, and a graphic score of Ode to Joy and Oompa Loompa using a system of colourful, cute, and cool graphics of animals courtesy of Pretty Grafik Designs, Montreal, Canada (check them out on Etsy). This access pack is very easy to understand, and all you will need to do is hand it to your TA. No fuss, explanations, or anything. It’s done for you. Still need persuading? Okay - there is a full 30-minutes of video tutorial provided by me - I will actually teach your class the skills in a purpose-made video using Camtasia software, which enables absolute clarity through various tools that you simply can’t repeat in a live setting. While I’m doing this, you can sit at the back of the room, keep an eye on the students and catch up with your marking. I use my video lessons in my own classroom for this reason - and because they fit the worksheets perfectly, there’s no confusion. There is an extension task for the gifted students - a 4-part arrangement of the Oompa Loompa song courtesy of myself in Sibelius Score form (all versions from 4-7.5 including Student and First versions) - and free note rulers (standard and animal ones for the lower-ability) on A3 PDFs that you simply need to print, laminate, and guillotine to keep your keyboards free from board markers, and facilitate instant access to playing music. Finally (yes, there’s more!) you have a 30-mark assessment designed to test the key learning of this project, all complete with an answer sheet and student reflection/ DIT sheet.

Musical Eras Activities History of Music

There are up to 3 hours of content in this pack, which covers each of the 6 musical eras of the Western Classical Tradition, a 900-year musical journey! It’s a great introduction to the musical eras and because of the way it is designed and structured, it is also an excellent choice for cover work. Each of the six musical eras from the Medieval to the 20th-Century has its own reading, writing, and listening activity, with a further True or False activity for Medieval and Renaissance, Baroque and Classical, and Romantic and 20th Century, to deepen understanding. While students complete the reading and comprehension activities for each era, there are YouTube links provided to suitable and interesting pieces of music to play in the background, giving students a ‘flavour’ of the era that they are reading about and answering questions about, and a listening sheet to record their observations and opinions for a class discussion at the end of the activity. The links are all checked and are valid as of 28th October 2020. There is also a teacher handout with full instructions as to how to run the lessons, including questions to ask the students, and prompts to remind them of certain things. The great thing about this resource is it is also absolutely perfect for a supply or substitute teacher who has no specialist musical knowledge at all. The teacher handout even has a box at the bottom to give you feedback or concerns from the lesson(s), so you can follow up, just in case you have set it as cover. Everything has been thought of, and it is beautifully presented in an engaging and structured manner. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of my resources and on the quality of my customer service. Please send any enquiries either before or after purchase to rainynightmusic@hotmail.com and I will be more than happy to help you in any way that I can.

GCSE Music HAYDN and the SYMPHONY

There is at least 2 hours of resources, here - 1 or 2 lesson’s worth depending on how long your lessons are. This project works best when you - the teacher - is in the classroom, but it can be used as a cover lesson provided computer access is available. This download included two 2-page ‘quizes’ with two 2-page detailed answers, and a PowerPoint presentation with Objectives, Outcomes, and task explanations (with approximate timings). The way that I teach this lesson is to briefly model independent learning: how to ask Google the ‘right’ question in a number of different ways in order to find out the answer to a question; how to persist and be prepared to read information that may be good, but ultimately not answer the question you asked. It teaches students ‘how’ to learn using the internet as a research tool - you are there to guide their choices, differentiating between good and bad information. The beauty of this lesson/ lessons is that students always end up learning loads of things that you didn’t set out to teach them - but you have a comprehensive list of answers including all the key information that they need to know. The best way to do this, I find, is to have two or three separate teams competing to gain the highest scores on the quizes - I usually reward winners with chocolate and House Points for extra motivation! Student feedback on this is always positive - especially the story about Haydn’s head, which I am reliably informed is both “gross” and “funny” - certainly memorable! I hope you enjoy the resources and thank you for purchasing the Rainy Night Music brand.

AQA AS and A Level Music 80 MINUTE VIDEO GUIDE to the entire course and to Independent Learning

Put simply: if you teach AQA A-Level Music (new specification 2016+), then this is the best £9 you will ever spend. Yes, there are a couple of things that are specific to my school in terms of its policies on how, when, and who decides when a student is AS or A Level, and a couple of things specific to my own department policies, but that does not detract from what this is: a fully comprehensive guide to the requirements of the AQA AS and A Level Music courses, as interpreted by an experienced Head of Music. I have always used such a video (this one was only made last year, 2016, for the new specification), but it has been shared to the school’s Google Classroom and Moodle for both students and parents to view at their leisure. There is not a single student or parent who could say ‘I didn’t know about that’. This video covers: the differences between AS and A Level Music in terms of both content, weightings, and standards for each of the 3 elements of the course; the set works, including a decent amount of background teaching to the various composers and genres listed; a guide to learning independently - from how to take notes in class, to how to share information with other students, produce detailed notes, and expand those notes through a series of low, medium, and high-level questions (all explained on the video). This insight into ‘how’ to learn at VI Form was actually taken up as a whole-school model for my school by the SLT. Students do not necessarily know ‘how’ to conduct the necessary independent research outside of the classroom - this video dedicates at least 25 minutes to just that. Don’t forget it also instructs parents how to assist, and as it comes with a Site License option, should you take that up, you are free to put this on your own school e-learning platform so that your students and parents may benefit as much as mine. I have even used this video for staff training, with great feedback. You will need to provide the students with print-outs of the AQA Specs which are referred to in the video - I wouldn’t include those PDFs here in case it looks like I am selling the specs! The PDF resources included in this are referred to in the video and are to do with the independent learning. I hope that you get as much benefit from this video in your school as I do in mine. Thank you for buying Rainy Night Music.

Composition for Beginners Composing Project Year 7

(1)
Perfect for Year 7, this project takes students on an exciting journey which begins with the introduction of the Musical Alphabet. From here, they learn how to construct melodies using ordinary words. They are then introduced to simple 3-note chords - again using only the letters of the Musical Alphabet (no sharp or flat symbols, just letters). Students then learn how to match their words with chords, which becomes the basis of a melody with an accompaniment. The next part of the journey is to learn 4 of the basic music symbols and their numeric values in terms of beats (semibreve=4, minim=2, crotchet=1, quaver=1/2). Students group the symbols in a variety of ways so that the combined value is always 4, which creates rhythms. Finally, students are shown how to allocate these rhythms to the words that they have already matched with chords. This creates a rhythmic melody with an accompaniment. The project may end with students (in pairs or small groups) performing their compositions at the piano - a printable ‘note ruler’ is included with the download pack, which fits perfectly over most standard piano keys so that students know which notes to play. They may or may not perform the rhythms correctly, but the composing process, at a basic level, will have been properly learned. I take great pride in the high quality of resources, the outstanding value and excellent customer service that customers benefit from. I believe that my students deserve the very best and I will not sell any resources that I would not use for my own students. I hope that you decide to purchase from my store, and remember: please do get in touch if you have any questions at all. Contact Steve at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com
