There a vast array of resources including tables to identify properties of shapes to making a net of regular 3d shapes. Be creative and see if you can make a cube net using some of these resources; spaghetti and marsh mellows or straws and blu tac ,or using construction toys Children in year 1 should identify how many 2d shape faces they can find on a 3d shape. They should locate shapes in the environment and label them. In year 2 children will be identifying properties of 3d shapes such as vertices, edges, right faces, number of 2d shapes needed for a net etc. They should also compare one 3d shape with another one and discuss what is same and different.

The Day the Crayons Quit is a working at the expected standard reading text for Year 2. This guided reading unit is a wonderful text to use to engage reluctant readers. This reading unit is designed to support the new English Reading Framework. It is suitable for comprehension with looking, clue and thinking questions and encourages children to talk through their answers using a reciprocal approach. The resources have been designed for children to read a few letters at a time and answer literal and inference based questions. There are also other links such as poetry about crayons so that children can experience a range of genres and respond to them. Teachers can allow children to read letters written in the style of the book so there is a 'I quit' letter from the teacher for children to respond to. This work can help towards moderation and assessment purposes and evidence at the end of the year. The unit was taught over 3 weeks and includes visuals for additional activities such as predict what the crayons are saying in speech bubbles. Children read the book and plan how the main character returns home after learning her lesson about friendship and disloyalty. Children plan, invent and edit in this unit of work. there are lots on visuals and grammar features included to ensure that the Year 2 ITAFS are met. It can be easily adapted for year 3 also. A very entertaining book that will engage all readers. Grammar features include - practicing speech and alternative verbs for said. Practicing using suffix endings -ment, -less, -ness, -er, -est. Pupils write at length and improve stamina for writing. They develop characters and settings through description and dialogue. The story supports pupils to show good v evil characters in their writing.

Year 2 Narrative Unit to inspire greater depth and mastery writing skills. An excellent bundle of resources suitable for year 2 and year 3. Includes 5 weeks of planning for English and 5 separate grammar exercises within context of the book to be taught alongside it. A cold writing task begins with writing a narrative(fable) of a fox. An exemplar text is provided (re-written in the past tense to imitate and innovate). There are also other opportunities for independent creative writing pieces integrated in the unit so that children can practice skills and rehearse them independently. Book talk and comprehension activities are also included. The language in the text is ambitious as well as appropriate for children to achieve the TAF statements for the year 2 curriculum. This unit can be adapted to suit lower KS2. Links to films and short clips provide opportunities for non-fiction writing e.g. Recount of how fires start in forests or bush lands. If children have previous experiences of writing instructions- they can apply this by writing 'How to mend a broken wing' instructions or make wings for Magpie to fly in DT. Year 2 Maths Measures - Reading scales in kg and grams. First, the children have the opportunity to think about the different measures of unit required for different purposes, e.g. measuring height of door, amount of liquid in bath, the length of playground, weight of book etc. They then focus on reading scales for mass and find out how to read scales accurately. Year 2 Maths - Measures ‘Capacity and Reading scales’ These are activities to assess children’s ability to read scales in ml and liters. Children should have first hand practical experience measuring into different size cylinders or bottles first to get secure understanding of when to use ml or liters. They should experience for example that four 250 ml containers fill a liter bottle. They can then move on to identifying the reading of scales in different jugs and solve problems. Year 2 Maths Measures - Reading scales using a thermometer and solving problems with temperature. This activity involves solving problems with temperature, including temperature increase and decrease. The children write a simple equation to show their working out, and then show the answer on the thermometer provided in degrees. Children must have prior knowledge, using and reading a real thermometer e.g to check and read the temperature of indoor space or outdoor space. They should handle thermometers and try to take a reading in different places to see how the temperature drops or increases. Year 2 Science Materials and Their Uses Unit has been creatively linked to the topic of Great Fire of London. The task is to write a secret message using varying materials (substances) and see if they can be easily detected. some of the materials they can try writing the word ‘Fire’ with is, chalk white pastel white crayon oil milk lemon children are encouraged to think about how to record their findings independently for greater depth and show reasoning during their planning. A 14 slide powerpoint explains the process of enquiry which supports helping children to think of their own enquiry questions and ways of finding out. There are great opportunities for cross curricular work that should not be missed. Science in this context has been made purposeful and this is a fun enjoyable lesson to do.

It includes subheadings for body, eats, habitat, dangers. it gives children enough information about snails so they can research and then write their own information text about how to keep pet snails. This encourages children to apply their learning to a new context. Ideal for a topic unit in science and suitable for keeping pet African snails in class.
