Photosynthesis lesson - develop higher level thinking - deciding which plant to feed the world

(0)
This is a lesson that is designed to develop higher level thinking on photosynthesis. This could be used at KS3 or GCSE and would fit into a scheme of work where the students have previously covered photosynthesis. In this lesson students are introduced to the thoughts of Thomas Malthus who said that resources (e.g. food) limit the growth of the population. Students are then given a task where they need to compare four plants and decide which plant they would recommend to farmers to grow. They need to justify their choice by referring to data from the sheets - such as saying that plants with longer root hairs will absorb more water and minerals or that plants with a greater density of chloroplasts would photosynthesis at a greater rate (assuming that CO2 etc are not limiting). Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

This is a LO slide that can be easily modified to all key stages and classes. A photographic example of a students work is provided. The first column of boxes is completed at the start of the lesson. The second column is completed half way through. The last column is completed at the end during a plenary that makes use of the LOs. Pupils write R,O,G in the boxes and show their red, orange or green colour cards. The cards can be left on the table during the lesson so the teacher can check understanding.

Lesson menu for teaching assistants

This is a version of my teaching menu that I have modified for teaching assistants. It is most beneficial for independent learning and science practical lessons. The TA helps lower ability pupils earlier in lesson and higher ability pupils later in the lesson.

This is a lesson menu that I have designed initially for low ability pupils (levels 3 to 5) but then extended to higher ability (levels 3 to 6). It complements LOs. It can be easily modified for all lessons.

These are printed in 2 slide handouts and laminated they are then stuck to a number line made with red tape and 0.5m markers in green tape. A photo of the number line in my lab is provided to model how this activity may be set up. I have 2 number lines on the floor of my classroom at the front and back of the lab. Useful experiments on speed, diffusion and discontinuous vs continuous variables.

These cards provide information about 4 fictional plants and provide information about the height of the plant, length of root hair cell, number of chloroplasts in each leaf cell, time to grow, yield and other information such as drought tolerance. Students can use in a variety of plants lessons. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

Homework handout - organ transplant - levelled

This is an adapted learning objectives slide that I created for a class as a printed homework slide (6 slides per page) on organ transplants. It is levelled in a similar though more concise way to Badger level assessed tasks. Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com.

AFL Strategies 4 - spider web

This is a visually engaging and fun method for students to self assess their progress at the end of a class. If more than 1 web is used students could assess their progress at the start, during and end of a task as part of assessment for learning. Slides are printed as 6 slide handouts. I have designed a Scrabble board and scoring sheet. When I printed these I double-sided the 2 pages (board one side and scoring sheet the other) and laminated them. These boards can be reused. This suits any topic where vocabulary is being tested. Have fun!

This is a lesson that was observed and rated outstanding by OFSTED criteria. Lesson menus in the main ppt are printed on 2 slide handouts then cut out. LO are printed on 6 slide handouts and then cut. The patient slides are are also printed on handouts and used as cards. Use patient 1 to start with. A practical can be used also and a transplant shown by removing a torso heart and replacing it with a free-standing plastic model.

Revision aids for science 1 - Mnemonics

(1)
I am putting together a series of science revision resources designed to improve success in science exams. This resource includes mnemonics for cell cycle, cis-trans isomers, enthalpy, food tests (buret etc) and protein structure. I will provide a student-friendly powerpoint for later in the year. Feedback to my TES inbox please. Let me know mnemonics that you would like to be included and I will add these to my list. The YouTube videos link to nemonic songs. I adapt the YouTube reactivity series nemonic to get more able students to include metals such as Tin and Platinum.
