AQA English Literature Paper 2 Unseen poetry practice

(0)
Unseen poetry practice for AQA GCSE English Literature Paper 2. PowerPoint outlines what to expect in Paper 2 and assessment areas. Using Philip Larkin's 'An Arundel Tomb' and 'Tears, Idle Tears' by Tennyson, the lesson encourages group work, with students working independently to annotate the unseen material, before feeding back to the rest of the class. Lesson works towards preparing for both the extended and comparative exam questions, which can be used in the following lesson or homework tasks. Included are annotated copies of the poem for teacher's reference or for students who need that extra support. I appreciate all constructive criticism, so I hope you are able to take time to review this resource. Writing to Persuade and Argue

(0)
2-lesson PowerPoint, originally delivered to KS3, exploring the techniques of writing to argue and persuade. The first lesson analyses an example of persuasive writing through an NHS stop-smoking leaflet. The second lesson develops this understanding by applying knowledge to an example question. Students are encouraged to use the planning frame to help structure their work before using all the techniques learnt in their own writing. A useful two-parter lesson that introduces students to these writing skills that can be built on when tackling more in-depth writing tasks at KS4. Originally delivered to a weak KS4 group, this lesson could be adapted for KS3. Introducing the term 'presentational devices', the lesson explores how this can be applied to media texts, with an analysis of an Oxfam leaflet. With several questions guiding the students to pick out key features, the lesson leads students to write their own analysis of the text. The plenary encourages personal assessment, comparing their own response to a model answer. 'Of Mice and Men' section 5 close analysis

Close analysis of extracts from section 5 in 'Of Mice and Men'. Lesson designed for group work, leading to class feedback. The outcome of the lesson is that students should have a detailed set of notes on all sections that have been analysed in the lesson, being able to answer a foreshadowing question at the end. This lesson encourages close analysis of passages and collaborative learning. The extract booklet is set up for A3 size to allow for notes and group work. It should help prepare students to answer extract-based exam questions. Files in this resource: Section 5 close analysis - PowerPoint of lesson Chapter 5 extracts - Word document of extracts

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde extract analysis

(1)
Using the AQA English Literature Paper 1 as a guide, this lesson focuses on practice for how to answer an extract question. After outlining Paper 1 with a reminder of what is being assessed, students work in groups to analyse the extract from ‘Dr Jekyll’ and prepare a plan in response to an exam question. Following class feedback and a whole-group plan, students finish with writing their own response with peer assessment to help identify areas for improvement. An annotated copy of the extract is also included, along with an optional slide that helps to scaffold the second part of the essay question. I appreciate all constructive criticism, so I hope you are able to take time to review this resource. OCR G321 Main Video task checklist

(0)
A helpful check list for both student and teacher which breaks down the mark scheme into tasks. It allows students to ensure they are covering all elements of the coursework and ensures continuous dialogue between student and teacher. There is a section at the end for coursework deadlines which can be easily be edited. From a teaching/marking perspective, this significantly helped when marking the final pieces of coursework and proved useful when passing on feedback to the following year's students. 'Of Mice and Men' Themes

(1)
Originally delivered to a weak KS4 class, this lesson acts as revision on the themes in 'Of Mice and Men'. Checking understanding of what a theme is, the lesson identifies the themes in the novel, leading to group work where students find evidence of their allocated theme. Whilst the plenary suggests class feedback, this could be extended for more able students, requiring them to answer a question on one of the selected themes. This task could also be used as a speaking and listening assessment opportunity. File in this resource: Themes PowerPoint of lesson

'Kid' - Simon Armitage

(1)
A two-part lesson that makes an ideal “one-off” when teachers have completed schemes of work. Possibly ideal for the festive season where students and teachers can have a bit of fun, study something different and not be overloaded by Christmas-themed work! Aimed at KS3, this resource looks at ‘Kid’ by Simon Armitage. Through the use of Youtube clips (links included), the lesson opens by asking students to explore what they already know about Batman and Robin. The lesson develops to explore the poem through pair work, with the title not being revealed towards the end of the first lesson. The final task allows students to show what they know with a reading analysis question. The second lesson allows for creative writing and independent work. With a selection of tasks available, students choose three they wish to complete, finishing in the lesson and for homework. A one-off lesson exploring John Agard’s ‘Alternative Anthem’. Ideal for KS3 classes, this allows students to recognise the stages of focussed analysis, particularly in preparation for GCSE poetry. Beginning with a post-it note driven class discussion on questions the students have about the poem, the lesson moves to independent group work. Students are given an area to focus on before feeding back ideas to the class. The plenary PEE task can easily be extended for more able/older students. I appreciate all constructive criticism, so I hope you are able to take time to review this resource. Covering 'Poppies' by Jane Weir, in preparation for the Power and Conflict theme for AQA English Literature Paper 2, this PowerPoint explores the poem in detail. Allowing some independent analysis initially, the lesson leads towards writing an extended reading analysis of the text. This is a multi-faceted lesson and there are practice questions for both Paper 2 and English Language Paper 1, Section B (Writing). Mark schemes and AOs have been included in the PowerPoint to enable students to become familiar with these and help plan their responses. Due to the nature of the tasks, it is expected this PowerPoint will cover at least two 1-hour sessions or these activities could be adapted for extended homework responses.
