A unit of work I did not design, but these are the lessons I created to teach it. The lessons focus on The Tempest and Othello. These lessons were designed to be taught to a bottom set Year 9 class with more interest in staring out of the window than exploring the linguistic delights of the Bard. However, once I started to Story Woosh the plays, the analytical lessons became much more productive.

A unit designed to be taught to Year 7. It introduces them to the basics of the Media and gets them writing creatively - a Travel Brochure. Includes resources and articles.

I had SO much fun with this unit of work! It helped that the TA in my class went on to become a local MP for Labour (still is as far as I can tell...). Essentially, this series of 5 lessons - which, by the way, totally went over the 5 lessons I gave myself to teach this - explores a number of different political speeches. Included in the pack are a number of transcripts - Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech, Alex Ferguson's farewell speech, Bush's post-911 address to the nation and the transcripts of Clegg, Cameron and Brown from the First Televised General Election Debates (heavy stuff). I was a little tentative at teaching this to a bottom set year 9 class, but they totally got on board with the debates (they tore shreds out of Brown...) and engaged well with the controlled assessment task at the end. I know that the controlled assessments are now null and void (a shame really), but the exploration of speeches might be useful to someone out there in the teaching ether...

These lessons are to be ran in tandem with watching the 1963 versions of the film (not the modern version - the pilot is still alive!). You can insert these two lessons at any point in the SoW.

Another experiment with mixed success. Attempted with a particularly apathetic bottom set year 10 group and got some decent Band 3s - I felt they left a lot out on the field so to speak. There is a lot of scope for taking this idea and developing it - if Gove leaves off the specification (unlikely) I will be coming back for a second crack at this. If not, I will modify it for a KS3 scheme in the future. Happy trails.

Series of power points designed to help students to write their own Gothic Short Story.

A resource with simple worksheet that encourages students to read the short story 'Your Shoes' by Michele Roberts. It also builds in the Point, Evidence and Explain way of thinking. This is written as a Homework activity for higher ability sets or as a lesson for weak GCSE classes.

The first lesson of a SoW I have recently created to teach Lord of the Flies to Year 7. A set of worksheets including comprehension questions and synopsis summaries of a play, prose and a poem. Each sheet has comprehension questions that lead the A level students towards understanding. Still trying to get my head around this course so feedback would be appreciated as to how useful these resources are.

Here you will find the reading lessons for my Lord of the Flies SoW for the mid to higher ability (Learning outcomes measured against Levels 4 - 6). IMPORTANT: Lessons 6 and 7 use sound-clips which I couldn't upload - you will have to find suitable sound effects yourself. Please feel free to add feedback and any suggestions.

The third and final stage of my Lord of the Flies SoW. I am still adding in alternative lessons to this so expect some changes. The writing assessment focuses on a letter-in-a-bottle activity. As you can see, there is heavy emphasis on punctuation. Feedback welcome. The handwriting lesson is based upon a workbook i found on TES - I take no credit for it!

The first part of a poetic investigation using all those old copies of the AQA anthology from yesteryear. The assessment is designed to focuse on RAF2,3,5 and 7. Each poem is split into two lessons; the first focusing on the cultural aspects and the second on the language. ALL of these power points are rendered in pink to allow Dyslexic students to read them without the text glaring. Second part to follow....

Shows lessons building up to a reading assessment looking at RAF 2,3,4 and 5. These lessons are targeted at a top set Year 8 class with levels ranging from 5 - 7.

I take no credit for the creation of these (probably by now ) universal acronyms. However, with a lot of my classes i find providing them with this sheet a good starting point. Use PEE sheets for lower ability students in KS3 and 4. Use PETER sheets for higher ability students in KS3 and 4.

A series of lessons exploring a variety of different writing styles (using David Lodge's 'The Art of Fiction' as inspiration) then targetting L5,6 and 7 for EACH of the Writing Assessment Focuses. You will need a copy of the OLD AQA Anthology (The one with Limbo on the first page). Dracula, Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire, Catcher in the Rye and a copy of 'The Mysteries of Harris Burdick' Portfolio (Images can be downloaded, but it costs about £13 from ebay). I shall add to this as i create my power points. They will all follow the AQA Working with the Anthology Achieve a C textbook. Hope they prove useful to some.

Using the PEE format I've made user friendly sheets specifically relating to Spoken Language to help students plan and structure their responses. These are useful if the students are familiar with the terminology first.
