Lewis and Clark: Great Journey West | National Geographic Documentary (TV - 2002) challenges students to compare the expedition to a modern day expedition, empathize with indigenous tribes, and describe Sacagawea’s contributions to the journey. Ask students to put themselves in the shoes of the members of the expedition, make decisions and support them with evidence from the movie and their own perspectives. Finally, ask students to research and explore how the journey from St. Louis to Astoria has changed or write a research essay on one of the tribes that the expedition encountered. There is also plenty of beauty in this movie as students explore the relationships between brave characters like Liesel, Max and Hans. Explore their character traits and how Liesel develops her literary skill. Finally, analyze the many sacrifices that were made in the story and determine which one would have been the hardest.
