Factors Effecting Research Method

Card sort task sorting out practical, ethical and theoretical factors. I ensure students have this in front of them at all times when going through the research methods.

“Sirrrrrrrr… can you do us a thing with all the case studies in?” Erm… no. You can do it yourself. Should be handy for revision. Probably can be adapted for other subjects.

A 4 page booklet on Public and Personal Documents, plus a little advantage and disadvantage sheet. Easy to follow. Takes one lesson, maybe longer.

Factors Impacting Choice of Sociological Research Method

This is a basic task which should be completed near the start of any research method topic. It’s a pretty basic sort the cards out into the right box task, the actual table should be printed on A3 and the cards cut out on card. Once stuck on correctly, students should have this table on their desks whilst each individual method is being taught.
Secondary Socialisation Introduction

Secondary Socialisation Introduction

(0)
This lesson is designed to introduce the concept of secondary socialisation, predominantly through Education. There is some comparative analysis with primary socialisation with a bit on particularistic and universalistic standards. There is not that much detail here. As I say, it is introductory stuff designed to introduce concepts and get the students thinking and doing something.
Welfare Spending

Welfare Spending

This is a task to indicate the difficulties of welfare spending in poorer countries. Print the sheet off and enlarge to A3. Give students a budget (i start off with 200 Billion) and let them spend. They have to spend incrementally, so if they want everything in one area it costs 55 Billion). After they have done this, slash the budget to 30 billion and do the same task.

Sociology and Social Policy

This is suitable for AQA A2 Sociology and CIE AS Sociology. The powerpoint is adapted from something I found and updated to include some mention of Trump and Theresa May and generally make it more accessible to A-Level students. Some knowledge from the teaching perspective about various things is assumed. This is predominantly designed to work in a UK school but should be accessible around the world.

Longitudinal Studies

A collection of resources to help teach Longitudinal Studies. This was inspired by a particularly tricky CIE AS Sociology question a few years ago. You will need access to the UP Series, which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0l541FH_W0TPrwYHx7P7M-XhNzLN4uUb

Just some straightforward tasks on Moral Panics. Predominantly for A-Level but would easily work for GCSE
Postmodernism and Pokemon GO!

Postmodernism and Pokemon GO!

(0)
A rather quite simple lesson teaching Postmodernist interpretations of the Media through Pokemon GO! Capitalise on the fad from a few years ago (Yr 13 students will no doubt remember it from earlier in the school). Get them to download it on their phones and tell them to go catch Pokemon for 15 minutes. See how they get on. Show some YouTube news clips about people getting into trouble, then read the texts and complete the table.
