Problem Solving Task- The Brownie Problem (Fractions-Multiplication/Division/Comparing)

(0)
As students engage in authentic problem solving, they learn how to apply the mathematics they learn in the classroom to the world beyond! Students must determine who received a greater portion of a tray of brownies in task. -This task encourages students to apply their fraction sense to determine when and how to appropriately multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions. -Additionally, students will compare two unit fractions to determine which is greater. This PowerPoint includes teacher facilitation questions, a guide to understanding the mathematics in the problem, a scaffolded approach to problem solving, and possible solutions. This is the method I use to help my students engage deeply in problem solving and stretch themselves beyond "number plugging" as many students do when they solve a "word problem". I have included a powerpoint version as well as a printable .pdf to fit the needs of your classroom.

Discussion Starters for Collaborative Work

(0)
This product includes discussion starters and prompts to help students engage in meaningful conversations with their teammates as they do group projects and work together to solve problems. These were created with math in mind but could easily be utilized in any other subject area where students work together! I use these as reminders for my students by laminating them and taping them onto the tables or placing them inside acrylic displays at my collaborative stations. There are 8 different backgrounds and 2 styles. The pre-made product is wonderful for easy use and quick implementation while the blank templates allow students to brainstorm their own ideas and create a document which reflects their beliefs and values concerning group work. There are discussion starters for when your students are... "Just getting started" "When you want to share an idea" "When you need someone to explain their thinking" "When they disagree" "When they need to refocus" For example, when a student needs a friend to explain their thinking they might say... -Can you help me understand… -What did you mean when you said… -Can you tell me more about… -Can you explain how you… -Is there another way you could explain that? -Why did you choose this strategy? -How do you know you are right? Thank you so much for your consideration in this product! I hope it fits your needs and proves to be a helpful resource!

Ordering Decimal Numbers to the Thousandths Place Self Checking Puzzles

(1)
Great for Stations or a Class Wide "Scoot" with Partners! These puzzles are easy to set up and self checking! To set them up just print (two sided), cut them out, and paperclip the sets together or sort into small baggies. Then students can organize them in order from least to greatest. If they think they are in the right order they flip them over and look for the message on the back. If the message makes sense, then they have them in the right order. If not, they should flip them over and try again. A student recording sheet and key is also included! :)
