This is the fourth lesson in a series of six covering the new Edexcel A-Level History unit: Mao's China 1949 - 1976. This series of lessons covers Key Topic One: Establishing Communist Rule 1949 - 1957. The lesson is ready to teach and includes all worksheets and sources. The lessons refer to the textbook "Communist States in the Twentieth Century " (Bunce, 2015 - Hodder) although other textbooks could be used with the lessons. During the lesson pupils will: * Revise the problems Mao faced in 1949 * Use a source to evaluate Mao's attitude towards politics and violence. * Complete a card sort to identify the new political structure put in place by Mao after 1949. * Evalute the new political structure in light of the common program for China (studied during previous lesson in series.) * Identify the roles of different groups within the new power structure. During the lesson pupils will: - Complete a true or false activity to assess prior knowledge of Elizabeth. - Create an image based on descriptions of Elizabeth and compare it to pictures of Elizabeth painted during her reign. - Evaluate Elizabeth's problems and suggest possible solutions. Pupils will then compare their solutions to what Elizabeth actually did. - Identify Elizabeth's most serious problem and explain if they agree with the solutions she used. This is the second lesson in a scheme of work about the First World War. The lesson focuses on the assasination of Franz Ferdinand in 1914. The lesson is aimed towards year 9 pupils but could easily be adapted for other year levels. The lesson is ready to teach and includes all required resources in the PowerPoint. During the lesson, Pupils will: * Complete a starter activity match up key words (Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism and Nationalism) from previous lessons to their definitions. * Try to suggest how Gavrilo Princip could be responsible for the start of the war based on a picture of him. * Piece together the basic story of the assasination of Franz Ferdinand based on limited information. * Watch a video to consolidate information about the assasination of Franz Ferdinand. * Consider and respond to the statement "The First World War was not inevitable. It was caused by a series of coincidences." * Complete a newspaper article outlining the key events of the assasination and its impact. During this lesson pupils will: * Investigate the German military situation at the end of the First World War. * Watch a video to identify and evaluate the main reasons for Germany loosing the First World War. * Complete source analysis to define the key points of the stab in the back theory/Dolchstoss and discuss the attitudes of German soldiers at the end of the war. * Complete a card sort and watch a video to identify the main terms of the Treaty of Versailles. * Complete a writing task to prioritise and evaluate the impact of the Treaty of Versailles. * Complete a source analysis (cartoon) to evaluate German attitudes towards the Treaty of Versailles and discuss the concept of Diktat. * Complete a 12 mark exam question (homework) with a partial model answer. The Spy Game - Background to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

This lesson introduces pupils to the spying aspect of the Cold War with a particular emphasis on the Cuban Missile Crisis. During the lesson, pupils work in groups to evaluate different scenarios and present courses of action that America could take. In their groups pupils will: * Give suggestions of the best way to use the U2 spy plane against the USSR * Analyse spy plane photos of Soviet Missile Sites in Cuba * Consider different courses of action and advise JFK on what he should do about the missiles. *Hot-seat a briefing for JFK and what decision he should take. All resources needed for the lesson are on the power point and I have included brief notes on the slide to advice as to the best way to use them. I have used this lesson for many years (including during an outstanding observation) with great success.
