Job overview

St Oscar Romero Catholic School and Sixth Form is a successful, over-subscribed 11-18 school, enjoying a strong reputation within the local and Catholic communities. There are currently 1080 students on roll and we have waiting lists in all year groups.

In September 2024, the school opened a Sixth Form offering a traditional academic curriculum with some vocational qualifications.

We believe that strong literacy skills are fundamental to unlocking lifelong learning and employment opportunities for all of our students. Fostering a love of reading and fluency with a range of texts underpins educational achievement and this is central to our success. We are currently seeking a dedicated and passionate Reading Coordinator and School Librarian, who will play a pivotal role in our academic community, inspiring our students and supporting their literacy development.

Our Reading Coordinator and School Librarian is crucial in leading and coordinating reading- related activities for KS3-KS4, as well as managing the school library for the whole school. This position involves not only ensuring effective literacy development and promoting reading, but also managing our library, making it an inspirational space for learning. If you share our school vision for nurturing a love of reading and language, we invite you to apply for this role.

Our Reading Coordinator and School Librarian will champion literacy across our school community, promoting reading for pleasure, creative writing, oracy, and a curiosity for language. There are many opportunities for developing this role, which include: leading KS3 library lessons, facilitating author visits and expanding our library collection for sixth form provision.

We are a strong Catholic community in which every member of staff contributes to the spiritual and moral life of the school. We do this as role models in our relationships with students and in the way in which we work together. If you decide to apply for the post, you should be confident that you are able to support the Catholic ethos and principles of St Oscar Romero Catholic School.

If you are passionate about fostering a love of reading and literacy and share our commitment to providing an enriching learning experience for our students, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.

About St Oscar Romero Catholic School

Headteacher's Welcome Message

I am extremely proud to introduce and welcome you to St Oscar Romero’s Catholic School.

Our aim is simple, we want to be the best school in the country. This means that we can ‘hand on heart’ say that our students get a better deal than if they attended another school.

St Oscar Romero has been on an upward trend for the last six years. Last year, 86% of students achieved at least a Grade 4 (equivalent to a C grade or above) in both English and Maths and 60% of students achieved at least a Grade 5 (known as a strong pass) in both English and Maths. Departments across the school performed exceptionally well, with English, Maths and Science all securing results of 90%+ at a Grade 4+ or above.  Our Progress 8 score was +0.97, placing us in the top 2% of school's in the country.

In May 2023, Ofsted carried out a short inspection and concluded that ‘There is enough evidence of improved performance to suggest that the school could be judged outstanding, if we were to carry out a section 5 inspection now.’ Our last Diocesan Section 48 Inspection took place in July 2019 and judged the school as ‘Outstanding’ in every category. This was a first for the school and a proud moment in the school’s 65-year history.

As a Catholic School, St Oscar Romero’s is founded on Gospel values. We provide a nurturing environment of love, respect and discipline, where every individual is highly valued and our care and concern for others is central to our mission. We expect our students to work hard, behave well, dress smartly and pursue excellence in all that they do inside and outside of the classroom. Our culture is one of high expectations in all that we do.

I invite you to experience St Oscar Romero’s Catholic School first-hand by having a tour of our school and I look forward to meeting you in the future.
