In this lesson students will explore the development of Orthodox Christianity in the Byzantine Empire. Through a case study of Late Roman and Byzantine Corinth, students will discover evidence of Christianity spanning seven centuries.

Quotes and interpretations from scholars of religion and archaeology help to supplement the evidence for students who will be asked to play the part of an archaeologist tasked with interpreting the archaeological finds.

By examining how the Byzantine Empire preserved elements of the Roman Empire, students will increase their understanding of culture and religion in the Medieval Mediterranean world.

Comprehensive lesson plans and accompanying PowerPoints are available here.
