Scheme of Work (AQA) - A Level Spanish. Teacher and Student versions

(2)
If you are new to teaching and /or you want to update your scheme of work to the latest teaching research theories and the new OFSTED framework, this is what you need! Editable documents included This is a 2 year scheme of work for the A Level Spanish AQA course following the upcoming new OFSTED Inspection framework and based on the latest Theory of Knowledge (latest scientific research on learning). It sounds scary but it isn’t! The curriculum overview summarizes the concepts that students have to grasp, the grammar that accompanies it, as well as the generic skills and activities that they acquire/improve/do in class. Each of the topics also has a “refining”(knowledge) section, which is basically a recall of things learnt previously and that you should include in your teaching. Finally, there is a section explaining why the topic is being taught/learnt. The new OFSTED framework stipulates that students are assessed on knowledge and also skills, hence a box explaining the common skills you can use to do so. I have also created a friendly version for the students, so that they can follow the programme of studies with you. There is a complete breakdown of all the grades per skill (based on June 2019 exam boundaries), advice on independent learning, boxes to write results and targets for mock assessments, etc. The final page details the qualities of an excellent linguist (they need to know what to aim for, I suppose:!)… Kindly respect copyright. This has been hours of extra work, and** I mean to make it accessible for all by pricing it low.** I’m not a banker but I would like some reward for my work and it helps to pay the bills! Any comments or questions welcome (I’m in the Facebook A Level Group). As always, enjoy! Blanca

Speaking cards, questions and game El racismo (New AL)

A comprehensive set of speaking cards focusing on cutting-edge areas of this topic. It includes cards on racist expressions in Spanish, islamofobia, aporofobia, racism against indigenous people in Peru, etc. They can be used in class, prepared for homework or as a mock exam. The revision notes for this topic can help students to prepare these cards. The general questions are for pair work, to prepare a presentation or for mock exams. I have included questions on Trump and his immigration policies which are seen as racist by many. At the end, there is a game to challenge students and help them with spontaneous talk. Thanks to all for your continuous support. Happy learning. Blanca

El Racismo (new A Level): Notas de revisión

As promised, here are the revision notes for this topic. Useful to prepare speaking cards, revise concepts, ideas, cultural information, etc. I have included notes on racism against indigenous people, the homeless and gypsies too, apart from the obvious. Also, examples of racist language, campaigns, etc. It seems to me that AQA could have labelled this topic better, for example "hate crime" as it is wider than just hate against "race". Happy teaching and learning, Blanca.

UPDATED. Based on rockmonkey’s excellent Y12 Spanish Booklet, I have made my own version. This is for the old AQA but it has things that you might be wanted to use in the new. Please forget my plagiarism (particularly rockmonkey) but you inspired me! I suppose that is part of the game! I hope you find it useful.

This is the second PP of a series to help teachers guide their students on writing an essay. The PP contains: background revision reading exercises to revise themes and characters, relating both model introductions, paragraphs and conclusions, with explanations to guide students to analyse these suggestions on short writing tasks to practice before the long essay annotations / essay plan on the question proposed. The PP is self contain and it can be easily adapted to your group. If you like it, you can also visit the first PP of the series on techniques to contextualise the film. This is an extract of a PP with 19 gap differentiated exercises in preparation for Paper 1, AQA. The PP has 5 exercises with single sentences to introduce Y12 to this type of challenging exercises. This is followed by 14 graded exercises of various difficulties, leading to the final exam. The exercises are varied in literary text, including one or two non-fiction, linked to the topics of the specification. They test a great variety of grammar traps such as pronouns, por/para, tenses, accents, etc. The design of the slide is courtesy of Shara_nuku. Revision notes on this "bodrio" of a theme! I have tried to simplify as much as possible a subject that I believe is not too appealing for the majority of students. You can use the revision notes in a variety of ways: students make flash cards with them, to introduce a subtopic, to revise vocab in context, for ideas for the IRP, etc. A set of stimulus cards and general questions complements these notes, but both usable as individual resources. Feedback on this resource always welcome. And thanks for those who are showing continuous support for my work. Enjoy, Blanca

Here is the final installment (hoorrayyyy!!!) of stimulus cards , general questions and one little exercise practicing making questions for the new A level. You will see the cards are varied in content, always trying to think a bit out of the box! The other installments are also available in TES. The first set on "Los valores tradicionales y modernos" contains sample questions (I have ploughed through every possible card on this planet so I hope I got them all!). You would have noticed these questions follow a pattern, so I have tried to reproduce it on my cards. There are revision notes/ general notes accompanying this card (useful for the students to prepare the cards independently). These are also available in TES. I hope you find them useful and your £2 save you a lot of work. Any comments, as usual, are welcome. happy teaching and learning! Blanca
IRP: Guide and template

IRP: Guide and template

Student guide for the IRP, as well as template for students to complete their work. The guide summarises the exam and how to prepare for it step by step. I t contains a list of sample IRP titles, introduction and note taking. … AND it has lists of expressions, connectives, etc that ensure students use the right language to score points. At the end of the guide there is also a list of generic questions to practice, which my students have used to no end! The template allows students to organise their note taking and analysis, so that the teacher can check progress and guide them. It also has cues on what to say in the introduction, based on past performances that scored top grades. My students do their work in a folder that they share with me and with other students. Their work is always safe and available. I bet you won’t be disappointed with what is for sale here. If you are, let me know!

Here is the fifth instalment of revision notes for you and for your students! They are quite comprehensive but I enclose the word version if you want to cut/adapt, etc. These notes can be used to prepare speaking cards (plenty of information on cultural aspects plus opinions on such topics as bullfighting and the regional languages), for revision before mocks, for end of unit revision, etc. I hope you find them useful and your students too. Please visit my shop to buy more revision notes and the infamous speaking cards (they are selling like hot cakes!). The prices of my resources are deliberately low so that they don't dig a hole in your pocket! Thanks for supporting my work. Any comments are welcome to this site or to:bgp@stbrn.ac.uk. Happy teaching and learning. Blanca

This is the last set of revision notes for the new A Level. It is meant to be a resumé as you can imagine, since the "patrimonio" is such a vast topic. However, I hope that it give grounds for the students to prepare speaking cards, to revise vocabulary and provide some ideas for the individual research project. I will also be publishing revision notes for the second year of the A Level, so please visit my shop again. And if you have missed it, I have an invaluable collection of speaking cards mirrowing the exam. These are also available in TES as cheap as £2 per unit or purchased for the year at £10. If you enjoy my resources, please encourage your colleagues to support me. Many thanks for all your comments. Happy teaching and learning. Blanca.

"A great resource for the price of a sandwich!" This is a booklet with stimulus cards, question starters and general questions on the topic "Los valores tradicionales y modernos" aimed at and tailored for students. It is based on the AQA board and the Oxford University Press AS textbook. The booklet contains a summary of the exam structure (separately for AS and AL), eight sample stimulus cards, questions starters and general questions on the subtopics. I have also included the source of the material in many of the stimulus cards, so that students can do extensive reading on the topic. The resource can be used in class or to set homework. I have created this booklet as there are only a few stimulus cards in the AQA site and as a teacher I need more resources than these to practice in class. Also, the type of questions in the new oral exam is very different to the old: they require a more precise response to the card, they test their knowledge of the culture and society and they are generally more challenging! I hope this resource helps teachers with their workload and it gives students an opportunity to practice and prepare for the exams. I welcome any feedback on this resource, either on this site or privately at: bgp@stbrn.ac.uk. You will find more cards in TES for units 2, 3 and 4. Thanks for your support.

A varied collection of cards on evictions and La Ley Mordaza, indigenous protests in Guatemala, Catalonia, rubbish collection protests, etc. You are spoilt for variety here! These cards are followed by general questions. The cards and questions can be used in class, set for homework, used in mocks or anything that stretches your imagination! I have also published revision notes on this topic. These can help with the preparation of some cards or to consolidate/extend knowledge of the topic. Feedback is always welcome. Enjoy, Blanca

Speaking cards, questions and game La convivencia (new AL2 AQA)

A set of 10 cards touching upon a variety of sub-topics including Toledo as a a city of three cultures, Lavapiés (a suburb in Madrid) as an example of a successful diverse quarter , the santería, threats to social coexistence, etc. Many cards have links to newspaper articles that students can read to prepare the card or for extension reading. This is followed by general questions that allow students to reflect on knowledge of the world around them as well as that of the Hispanic world. The game consists of a serious of statements that students have to place the context for and analyse. I have also published revision notes for this topic. Happy teaching and learning, Blanca

La convivencia: notas de revisión (new AL2 AQA)

Revision notes on multilingualism and multiculturalism in Spain (linked to peaceful coexistence); ways to promote "la convivencia escolar", including the context of Hispanic students in the USA,etc. There is also a section on threats to peaceful coexistence, such as ciberislamophobia, separatism, ETA and corruption. I have included some notes on the gypsies in Spain, slightly altered from what I included in the notes for "El racismo". This is so that students can make the conexion between both themes. Happy teaching and learning! Blanca

Speaking cards, general questions and game La inmigración (AL2 - new AQA)

This is a new set of cards for the topic of La inmigración, for the new AQA (slightly different to the old one in content!). The cards touch upon long lasting issues such as "La fuga de cerebros" as well as more recent aspects, such as Trump's proposals to deal with illegal inmigration in the USA. The questions are followed by general questions and a game to improve improvisation and fluency (with instructions). You can also purchase the revision notes in my shop. They will be useful to prepare the cards. If you like this series, please visit my shop as I have published sets of cards, questions, games AND REVISION notes for each of the AL1 units too. PLEASE leave a review, your feedback is very important to me. Happy teaching and learning, Blanca

Speaking cards, general questions and improvised situations La influencia de los ídolos (AQA)

(1)
This is the forth installment of cards, general questions and improvised situations that I have created (others also available in this site). Some of the context of the cards are: singers who sing using swear words, beauty pageants in Mexico, models who break mold, footballers who appear in ads, etc. The improvised situations practise expressing the opposite opinion and reasoning it. I enclose a brief preview to give you an idea of the material. If you found the resource useful (or not), I would be most grateful for a comment. Again, I hope that £2 is a reasonable price for everybody: it cuts your work and it rewards mine. I will be producing cards for Unit 5 shortly, so watch this space. Any comments here or at bgp@stbrn.ac.uk gratefully received. Enjoy!
