Read each word and decide whether it has the target phoneme in it. If it does, they place it in the column headed ‘ar’. If it doesn’t, they place it in the column headed ‘not ar’. For added challenge, they can write out the words in each column instead. Aside from your standard sorting activity, this has been successfully used as a relay race/scavenger hunt. All you need to do is put squares of velcro on the frames and on the back of the sound cards and your littlies can create and read as many nonsense names as they like! This is currently up in my classroom. I let my littlies choose the monsters that went up and they have a whale of a time making silly names in their spare moments.

Whether you read the word with the target sound or not, the children have to read both words and match the written word to the word you have said.
