Gothic vocabulary - In Gothic writing vocabulary can be quite tricky, but this lesson supports students in improving their use of vocabulary when creating narrative pieces. Students are provided with detailed lists of synonyms for adjectives, verbs and adverbs, all with a Gothic-style focus. The Tempest William Shakespeare language genre lesson that looks the use of prose and blank verse in Act 3 Scene 1 and Act 3 Scene 2 of the play. We explore how non-rhyming iambic pentameter is employed by Elizabethan and Jacobean writers to indicate class and status, and evaluate why Caliban has been given the gift of blank verse. We also look at the link between his use of language and Michel de Montaigne’s writings. A very useful way to study the play for both KS3 and KS4 students preparing for GCSE English Literature. We look at Of Mice and Men and Chapter Two, with a focus on the relationship between Lennie and George and how Steinbeck introduces the new characters of Crooks, Candy, The Boss and Curley. Additionally, we look at how Steinbeck uses a sense of foreboding to hint at the rest of the plot. As we study A Midsummer Night’s Dream we look at the play within a play in Act 5 Scene 1 and how Bottom and the mechanicals present Pyramus and Thisbe to the wedding audience. Students create their own performances of Pyramus and Thisbe before analyzing the comments made by Theseus, Hippolyta and the other characters as they watch and interrupt the actors.
