Cooking Food on an Open Fire
Immediately after the war many people cooked on open fires using wood, which was cheap or easy to gather free. Cook some potatoes on an open fire outside for children to taste with butter or cheese. If possible allow children to toast some marshmallows with adults.
Multi-media presentation - Saving rainforest 2
Children complete their presentations started in Session 10, bringing together the information they have collected in previous weeks and images selected from the internet.

Take a trip back in time to introduce art of icon painting from ancient kingdom of Ethiopia.
Children explore features of this art form and consider how they were painted and their purpose. They copy small areas of icons to capture style elements.
Eye On The Ball
With the World Cup in full swing both in school and in South Africa it’s time to become a statistician mathematician! Children use real data collected on their World Cup wall charts to find answers to their own questions.
Plants in the environment
The customers from around the world have come flooding onto the Native Nursery online shop wanting advice about which plants to buy for their climate. Children research each climate zone and make suggestions well suited to the conditions.

Campaign for Clean, Safe Water
Watch campaign films that educate people about the dirty water crisis in Africa. Children consider the hard-hitting facts learned and record how this makes them feel. Discuss what makes these films effective, in preparation for planning own films in the next session.

Life Chances
Use the life chances game to explore how your chances of being healthy and living a long life, depend upon where you live in the world. A focus on Africa.

One Well
Imagine that all the water on Earth came from one well! Children learn that the amount of water on our planet never changes and that we are all connected by the way we draw water from the same source. Children then convey this understanding through poetry.

Everything In Its Place
Children spot which items are out of place in a 1950s living room, and dress a character from each decade.
Fair Trade
Children consider arguments for buying fair trade produce and look at relevant websites including Christian Aid and Oxfam.
Children think about how fair trade does not address causes – unfair trade rules and greedy practices. How can we campaign to change these?
Children and Water
Using an informative and clear leaflet downloaded from WaterAid, children read and discuss how children in parts of Africa are affected by lack of clean water and sanitation. Facts are collected before creating own posters and leaflets entitled ‘Children and Water’.

Design Ideas
Yet again the children are called upon to help out Native Nursery, this time to make the shop more secure. The children use their knowledge of electrical circuits and conductors to create and modify pressure activated switches.

Madagascan Chameleon
Using Madagascan Chameleons as a model, show children how they can focus upon particularly interesting aspects of their chosen creature. They will need to write an explanation of this feature. Model this using the chameleon’s camouflage.

Water in everyday life
Remind children how important water is to all living organisms. Look at how little of the water present on earth is fresh and therefore drinkable.
Children investigate how animals and plants adapt to arid conditions and create posters to encourage us to save water.

Poverty and Food Security
Children think positively about ways in which we can help to improve the lives of people who lack food security. Thinking about our responsibilities as world citizens, children discuss ways of campaigning to change the causes of lack of food in Africa.
School's Out!
What do children do when they are not in the classroom? At playtimes, evenings and weekends? Discuss sport, games and hobbies. Write instructions for a playtime game or making a craft object to send to their link school friends. Try an African game or craft.

Meet Amina In Malawi
Dramatic changes to people’s lives occur when access to clean, safe water and latrine facilities are brought to a community. Children discuss ‘The Long Walk Is Over’ and read Amina’s story. They make ‘before and ‘after’ diary entries for her, expressing this change.

Spotlight on South Africa 2010
In 2010 the eyes of the World will be on South Africa and a country where once no sports teams visited will be a focal point for 32 teams and their fans. Children find out more about the 9 host cities and create tourist guides for each.
Creative Designs
Applying their knowledge of Mozambique batik, children plan and design a wall hanging. Children sketch their designs bearing in mind the techniques of batik and the need for clear, simple images.
Get Beading!
Time to have a go at beading! The traditional Ndebele methods of beading are demonstrated and children have a chance to experiment with this new technique.
