Compare performance poems that tell a story and identify the features that make a good performance poem. Children then write their own performance poetry based on a fairy tale. Perform it for an invited audience using dramatic conventions to enhance the poem.

Children read a range of quest stories, exploring structure and language choice. They explore 4 types of sentence and experiment with tense. Children write their own extended stories, concluding by performing their writing to a younger child. This plan uses the books Lost and Found and The Way Back Home, both by Oliver Jeffers and We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. It also uses Hamilton Group Reader The Quest.

Use the Animated Tale The Baby and the Rocket to introduce children to information texts. Compare facts and fiction. Make a large rocket and use photos of the construction to write instructions. Lots of activities for children to investigate both planets and rockets.

Look at diseases caused by micro-organisms. Invite a health professional into class for children to question. Discuss prevention and cure of illnesses caused by microbes including vaccination and antibiotics. Find out about the work of some famous scientists. Suitable for Y6 pupils.

Evaporation is the name of the game in this session as children use it to separate materials in solutions. They investigate a variety of liquids to see which leave a residue after evaporation and grow their own salt crystal. Suitable for Y6 pupils.

This session we consider how we are using up fossil fuels. How did we heat our homes and cook in the past? Discuss renewable energy and any local schemes to try and use more renewable energy. Challenge children to make a solar oven and cook something with it!

Children create a piece of rainforest in the classroom in this session. After looking at images of rainforests and their trees, children use coloured papers to create trees and leaves for display. Suitable for years 3 and 4.

Simple advice for parents on helping a child start reading.

Children study and compare a range of posters on the theme of pets and animals. They look at the meaning behind each and how they are effective through text, colours and pictures. They create their own posters and then web pages using headings, captions and pictures.

Your lunch is what you find to eat in the rainforest, not the contents of mum’s packed lunch! But there are other important differences too! Children use their notes from the previous session to compare their lives to those of children in the Jungle.

It’s forces ‘n’ fun in this session as the children get the opportunity to show what they already know. Through hands on activity they use slopes, magnets and elastic bands to revise previous learning. Forcemeters at the ready! Suitable for Y4 pupils.

Children discuss ways of crossing the Channel and then make a balloon-powered hovercraft.

Use findings from Rusty Nails Investigation to plan another test. Look at the changes that occur when common materials are heated, and then decide whether or not cooling will reverse the change. What happens if the materials are first cooled and then heated? Suitable for Y6 pupils.

Find out what children already know about materials and the changes that occur when they are mixed. Predict and investigate what happens when a variety of materials are mixed with water. (Re)introduce terms reversible and irreversible. Play a vocabulary game. Suitable for Y6 pupils.

Children receive a letter requesting help from the Native Nursery. Children must design and set up experiments to find the best conditions for growing seeds. They will monitor progress and report their findings in Session F. Suitable for Y5/6 pupils.

Look at micro-organisms that are beneficial to food production and the problems of food decay caused by micro-organisms. Study yeast growth and begin some decay investigations on damp bread and apples. Use yeast to make bread rolls and discuss food hygiene. Suitable for Y6 pupils.

This unit is all about having fun with iconic song lyrics! Children will explore underlying themes and influences in key songs by the Beetles and Bob Dylan before composing their own song lyrics about current issues that are important to them.

Number facts to 20, equality [3 days]. Children revise partitioning pairs up to and including ten, then 20, recording the corresponding addition and subtraction sentences. They use images such as the 20 bead frame and ‘slidy’ box’ cards to reinforce the idea of an empty box in number sentences. They use the idea of equality and the image of the number balance to help them to write number sentences such as 7 + 3 = 6 + 4.

Introduce children to the techniques of flour resist batik and explore the history of batik in Africa. Children get a chance to practise the methods themselves.
