Pupils must match up the two parts of sentences from the text that have been cut in two. Five sentence matching activities are provided, one for each chapter of The Iron Man novel by Ted Hughes. After reading each chapter of the novel, in pairs, pupils match up the beginning of the sentence with the correct ending, reading them aloud to check that they sound complete. Benefits for this activity: • Encourages pupils to discuss how they know which parts to put together • Leads to pupils to spot patterns in sentence structure • Gives the opportunity for pupils to re-read sentences many times over • Helps pupils attune their ears to the sound of a sentence • Helps children recall the events of the story • Provides the opportunity for children to pay close attention to the grammar of sentences including tense • Helps pupils recognise sentences in their own writing in order to demarcate them using the correct punctuation All resources come as easily editable Word documents and as PDFs.
