As a teacher, you know that teaching about the Rwanda Genocide can be a sensitive topic for students. That’s why I’ve designed a station activity that will engage your students and help them develop a deeper understanding of the genocide and its impact on Rwanda and the world.
The activity is designed for grades 8-12 and includes 5 stations, each with its own focus. The stations include:
Historical Background of the Rwanda Genocide - In this station, students will learn about the history and context of the genocide, including the role of colonialism and the tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups.
The Genocide - In this station, students will explore the events of the genocide itself.
The Role of Propaganda in the Genocide - In this station, students will examine how did the media and government use propaganda to promote violence against the Tutsi people
International Response to the Genocide - In this station, students will learn about the international response to the genocide, including the failure of the UN and the role of the international community, including USA.
A Survivor’s Story - In this station, students will read a powerful story of survival and resilience from Immaculee Nyirampore, a survivor of the genocide.
I’ve included political cartoons and photos in each station of the activity. These visuals will help students to engage with the material and gain a better understanding of the historical context and events.
Answer keys, worksheet with questions for analysis and a word bank to help your students understand and remember key vocabulary are also included.
