This resource has been designed for students working towards Functional Skills Maths qualifications at Entry Level 2 (Edexcel-Pearson, NCFE, City and Guilds, AQA, Highfield Qualifications, NOCN, Open Awards). It contains an age-appropriate, editable, 150-slide PowerPoint lesson on using numbers and the number system.
The PowerPoint will help pupils to achieve these outcomes:
Count reliably up to 100 items
Read, write, order and compare numbers up to 200
Recognise and sequence odd and even numbers up to 100
The PowerPoint clearly explains the number system, place value, and odd and even numbers. It also asks pupils to order and compare numbers using concrete, pictorial and abstract examples. Numerous opportunities are provided within the PowerPoint for pupils to develop and practice the skills required for Entry Level 2 using numbers and the number system outcomes. It is an ideal resource to introduce this component of the functional skills specification and for revision purposes.

This resource contains a rugby-themed maths dice and a coin toss game. Both games are played with a partner. It is ideal to use during the 2023 World Rugby Cup tournament.
Dice Game
The aim of the game is to score as many points as possible. Players take turns to throw the dice. Every time a 5 is rolled, the player scores a try (5 points). If a player rolls a 5 he/she has another turn straightaway. If a 2 is rolled the player gets a conversion worth 2 points. If a 3 is rolled the player gets a drop kick worth 3 points. If a player scores four tries in the game he/she gets a bonus point.
Coin Game
A game for two players. Players choose which team from the Rugby World Cup they are playing for. Players toss a coin to see who goes first. The player who is first tosses the coin. If it lands on heads a try is scored worth 5 points. If it lands on tails no try is scored. Do this 6 times. If the points are equal after 6 attempts, players continue taking turns, tossing the coin until the first try is scored.

Rugby World Cup Trip Maths Task
This is a maths investigation that involves pupils finding out whether they have enough money to pay for a trip to England’s pool matches at the Rugby World Cup in Paris. Pupils calculate the total cost of match tickets, return flights, accommodation, meals and travel to and from the airport. They are required to calculate the exchange rate from euros to pounds.
An additional task involves pupils ‘packing their suitcase’ making sure that it does not exceed the 20 kilogram luggage allowance. This requires pupils investigating the weight of items they are likely to pack and the weight of the suitcase itself.
Rugby World Cup Maths Game

If a 2 is rolled the player gets a conversion worth 2 points. If a 3 is rolled the player gets a penalty - 3 points. If a player scores four tries in the game he/she gets a bonus point. In the coin game players toss a coin. If it lands on heads a try is scored worth 5 points. If it lands on tails no try is scored.
