Please read the Terms of Use carefully. Christmas provides a great learning opportunity in German class. Activities featuring German Christmas vocabulary provide a dual learning platform, where students can learn about Christmas in Germany, at the same time as revisiting and revising language they have already engaged with. Using German Christmas images and vocabulary enables students to engage with traditions and customs in German-speaking countries, comparing and contrasting them to other Christmas practices they know or follow. It’s a really useful way of stimulating discussion about Christmas in Germany and other German-speaking countries. KS3 GERMAN KS4 GERMAN GCSE GERMAN ALEVEL GERMAN KS5 GERMAN CHALLENGE CARDS BUNDLE 13 SETS @ £3.00 EACH IN THE BUNDLE Files are non-editable in zipped formats. The bundle is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, shared or distributed outside your own classroom, in whole or in part, in any way. The license for purchase is a single-use license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. There are 13 sets of German Challenge Cards in this bundle. My students absolutely love challenge cards, and find them really useful for helping them get to grips with their German. Task cards are great for independent learning - students can work at their own pace, in pairs or in small groups, and really focus on the target language. The challenge card questions and templates focus on multi-skill language learning, not focusing solely on the target vocabulary - they provide students with opportunities to apply prior learning, and to encounter more complex language they may not yet have covered formally in class. There are answer keys and recording sheets for every set, though my students often just use their notebooks for writing their answers. Some sets have a question card template too - this is a really popular activity with my students, and they love to create questions for each other. Additionally, this enables them to apply their developing understanding of German in a very practical and creative way. Several sets also have accompanying vocabulary lists, which are great as a learning support resource, as well as a year-round reference resource. I have a series of challenge cards sets ready to go for my students - they’re a very popular choice for our ’free-choice’ learning time. In some set, I’ve included a sheet with a background, and one without. Similarly, in some sets I’ve also included a blank sheet, with no numbers, which is useful when students are working ‘randomly’ through the cards at different times. answer key - I find having a key essential for students, as it helps them to work and learn independently, and it also offers extra opportunity to engage with language - I tend to laminate sets of answer keys - one answer key for each small group is enough question cards template for students to apply their knowledge practically, and to create questions for each other - this is a really challenging and popular activity, and I encourage students to include other vocab and verbs they know or learn. FRENCH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES PRIMARY FRENCH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES KS2 FRENCH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES KS3 FRENCH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES KS4 FRENCH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES 10 DIFFERENTIATED WORD SEARCHES WITH ANSWER KEYS AND FRENCH CHRISTMAS VOCABULARY LIST Files are non-editable in a zipped format. The product is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. School licenses are available. Please read the Terms of Use. Word searches are a simple and effective way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 30 French Christmas words, which will also help to develop students’ awareness of some French-speaking countries Christmas traditions and figures, such as galette des Rois and Père Fouettard, which I’ve translated here as Father Fouettard, rather than Whipping Father. The vocabulary is really useful for stimulating discussion about French Christmas practices and customs. Students also enjoy talking about other Christmas traditions they know or follow. The vocabulary list features the definite article, though some grids also have the indefinite article / plurals for additional challenge. Grids 1-4 are French-French, where students are prompted with the French words, and look for them in French in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list to complete. Grids 5-8 are English-French, where the prompts are given in English, and students look for the French translation in the grid. They also write the French translation of the English word. Grids 9 and 10 prompt students with a specific Christmas image, and they look for the corresponding French word in the grid, also completing a French vocabulary list for additional consolidation. There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers, or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches and answer keys are in portrait format, with arrows indicating in which direction the individual words are located. There is an alphabetical French-English Christmas vocabulary list which students find really helpful. There are two formats: search grids and answer keys together, so that they can be printed out and copied double-sided, and search grids / answer keys as separate files. This product is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed in any way outside your own classroom. The set features a range of high-frequency French Christmas vocabulary, useful either as an introduction to, or consolidation of, the target language. Students can also develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their general French language skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions are differentiated, and are aimed at advanced beginner French students. They address not only French numbers 0-31, French mathematical language and French Christmas vocabulary, but also a broad range of grammar points, such as definite and indefinite articles, question formats and gender agreement in French. All the questions are in French, with the Christmas images providing students with visual learning support. The Christmas vocabulary and images help to develop students’ awareness of a range of Christmas traditions and figures in French-speaking countries, such as galette des Rois and Père Fouettard, which I’ve translated as Father Fouettard, rather than ‘Whipping Father’, and are also really useful for stimulating discussion about French Christmas practices and customs. This is a great alternative to more standard presentations and worksheets. Students also enjoy talking about other Christmas traditions they know or follow. The resource comprises the following non-editable files: = 48 differentiated question cards - laminate if possible, as they will remain in excellent condition for years = answer key - this can also be laminated, and shared among groups of students for class work = answer recording sheet - simply print as many as your particular groups need. My students generally use their class workbooks for working out and noting responses, though recording sheets are definitely useful for more formal assessment purposes. PRIMARY FRENCH KS3 FRENCH KS4 FRENCH GCSE FRENCH CHALLENGE CARDS 13 sets of challenge cards @ £3.00 each in the bundle. All files are non-editable in zipped formats. The bundle is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, shared or distributed, in whole or in part, outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-use license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. Challenge cards are an ideal language learning activity, providing multi-skill language learning opportunities. These sets are ideal for a range of French language classrooms from KS2 French / Primary French to KS3 French, and at KS4 French, students preparing for GCSE French as practice and revision. This kind of activity really does help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their French language skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions have a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in French in general, and on the focus language, for example, conjugating French RE verbs in the present tense in particular. I use task not only when we’re focusing on the focus language and grammar, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity. The goal is not simply to learn how French works, and how patterns can be identified and applied, it’s also about enjoying working with French, and to feel confident about doing so. The questions are differentiated, and range in complexity and challenge, with some calling specifically upon prior and new knowledge too, helping students make links and build bridges in their learning. There may be some vocabulary that students are not familiar with - these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language too. Other grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as gender agreement, direct and indirect objects, personal pronouns and question formats in French. The question card template available in some sets enables students to apply their knowledge practically and creatively, which is an essential element to successful language learning. To get the most from the questions, I frequently look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices. Identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses. All sets have full answer keys and recording sheets. 1: FRENCH NUMBERS 0-21 : 36 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-numbers-0-21-challenge-cards-11843713 2: FRENCH NUMBERS 0-31 : 48 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-numbers-0-31-challenge-cards-11759386 3: FRENCH CHRISTMAS NUMBERS 0-31 : 36 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-christmas-numbers-0-31-challenge-cards-12035663 4: FRENCH NUMBERS 0-100 : 48 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-numbers-0-100-challenge-cards-11741540 5: FRENCH DATES, DAYS, MONTHS, SEASONS : 36 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-dates-days-months-seasons-challenge-cards-11856578 6: FRENCH FRUITS : 36 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-fruits-challenge-cards-12586825 7: FRENCH VEGETABLES : 36 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-vegetables-challenge-cards-12587115 8: FRENCH FRUITS & VEGETABLES : 36 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-fruits-and-vegetables-challenge-cards-12587126 9: FRENCH TELLING THE TIME O’CLOCK & HALF PAST THE HOUR : 60 CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-telling-time-challenge-cards-1-12833553 10: FRENCH TELLING THE TIME QUARTER TO & QUARTER PAST THE HOUR : 60 CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-telling-time-challenge-cards-2-12833561 11: FRENCH TELLING TIME RANGE OF ANALOGUE CLOCK TIMES : 60 CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-telling-time-challenge-cards-3-12833565 12: FRENCH ER VERBS PRESENT TENSE : 48 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-er-verbs-present-tense-challenge-cards-12641881 13: FRENCH RE VERBS PRESENT TENSE : 48 DIFFERENTIATED CHALLENGE CARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-re-verbs-present-tense-challenge-cards-12646092 Have a browse in my store for more French resources, including special offer bundles and freebies. ENGLISH CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES ENGLISH FOR CHILDREN CHRISTMAS I HAVE, WHO HAS? ELEMENTARY ENGLISH CHRISTMAS I HAVE, WHO HAS? BEGINNER ENGLISH CHRISTMAS I HAVE, WHO HAS? TWO GAMES AND CHALLENGES FOR ALL ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS The resource is non-editable in a zipped format. It is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, shared or distributed outside your classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. School licenses are available. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. English Christmas I have… Who has… ? is a whole-group lively and communicative language learning game, which provides students with the opportunity to engage with English Christmas vocabulary, as well as working on their general English language skills, which is more meaningful than simply learning individual words at one particular time of year only. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompts of the English Christmas images, makes it perfect for practicing, reinforcing and refreshing English Christmas vocabulary. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. There are 32 Christmas words in English, and there’s a UK Christmas theme with some of the words, for example Christmas cracker, mince pies and Christmas pudding. The aim of the game is to arrange the cards in the relevant order. Students can either create a human chain, holding the cards themselves, or a card line, on the floor, a longish table or other flat surface. It’s likely that students will have more than one card each per game, depending on the size of the class. The vocabulary and images provide a really useful stimulus for discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in the UK and other English-speaking countries. There are two games, each with a different challenge: = Challenge 1: the nouns written out in full with the definite article, and the Q & A I have… Do you have…? Students walk around, calling out the question. = Challenge 2: the nouns are in a different order, with only the definite article, and the Q & A Do you have…? Yes / No, I have… . This challenge puts students’ vocabulary recall to the test, and students walk around, addressing other students individually. Play either as a whole-group game, or as a team game - which team can complete the challenge first? You can either play the challenges consecutively, or as a team game, swapping the challenges so that each team has a chance to play both challenges. These English Christmas Numbers 0-31 task cards are perfect for advanced beginner English learners, and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. I’ve found that lessons around the Christmas period are a great time for revisiting and practising language and structures we’ve looked at over the semester. The questions are entirely in English, and students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their developing knowledge of English in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. Most learners will be able to infer meaning from context and images, which have a real England/UK Christmas theme, such as Christmas crackers and mince pies, with vocabulary and structures repeated throughout, giving learners a chance to familiarize themselves really well with them. Nonetheless, it can be useful to read through the questions with the whole class first to check everyone is able to access the language, and therefore the activity, successfully. Students really do benefit in terms of language learning if they have regular and frequent opportunities to work with the cards, rather than simply working with them in a single lesson. The English Christmas vocabulary provides a really useful springboard for discussion about Christmas customs and traditions in England and the UK, comparing and contrasting these to other Christmas practices students may know. The resource comprises the following non-editable files: 48 differentiated question cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate and cut out. A lively whole-group multi-skill language learning game, ideal for Primary French / KS2 French and KS3 French / KS4 French students. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the clock faces, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing how to tell the time in French, and for pronunciation practice too. There are 8 clock faces per page. This size ensures they are sufficiently large for students to be able to read the time clearly, also allowing for an ideal font size to keep language clear and accessible. I always laminate my language learning cards - it’s definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. The aim of the game is to arrange the clocks in the relevant order. Students will generally have several cards each, depending on the size of your class. We usually set the cards on a table, so that students can see the timeline clearly. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges together, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. The games also work well as pair or small-group games. There are two games, each with a different challenge: = Challenge 1: with all the the clock times in numerical order, J’ai… Qui a… ? = Challenge 2: with the all the clock times in random order, which really helps recall and embedding new language, as students often learn time phrases in numerical order, As-tu… ? Oui (Non), j’ai… Have a browse in my store for more French resources, including special offer bundles and freebies. MERCI BEAUCOUP ET BON APPRENTISSAGE !

The word wall provides an instant introduction to the Spanish-speaking world, and is also great for reading, speaking and pronunciation prompts too. I often ask ‘quick questions’ such as ***¿Cuál es la capital de…?***, or ¿Sí o no? Madrid es la capital de Paraguay? - there are lots of questioning and speaking opportunities, using the word wall as visual prompts. Speaking does tend to be quite a challenging skill, particularly for beginner learners, so getting the most from classroom decor to encourage students to speak is really important - they’re a great tool for encouraging students to speak, and to construct sentences, from the very beginning of their Spanish learning. I’ve also found that there can be several countries that students don’t actually know, or have never heard of, so the word wall is really useful for helping them develop their general understanding and knowledge of both the Spanish-speaking and wider world. There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format. The flag and text are big enough for students to be able to see and read from various locations in the classroom. There are two design formats to choose from - Spanish flag, or plain, which keeps prep costs to a minimum. GCSE GERMAN KS4 GERMAN A LEVEL GERMAN VERBS CARDS TWO SETS OF 198 CARDS WITH WORKBOOKS @ £3.75 EACH IN THE BUNDLE Files are non-editable in a zipped format. The resource is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. 198 high-frequency German verbs with 198 matching English verbs cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment, ideal for GCSE German learners, as they prepare to move into and work confidently at advanced level German. Each set features 99 German verbs in the infinitive form, with 99 corresponding English verbs cards, and an 18-page Reference, Recall & Write Workbook. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional ‘vocabulary drilling’ exercises. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their core German verbs vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The game cards and accompanying Recall & Write challenges have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. It doesn’t matter if any of the verbs don’t feature in your medium or even longer-term learning plan: this is a great way of encouraging your students to engage with new language, and to build their vocabulary at the same time. This prepares them really well for creative activities in German - they will have a rich vocabulary to choose from. Students can work independently of the teacher, challenging themselves and each other in their best German accent to find all the matching verbs cards in German and English. The card templates allow students to apply their German knowledge practically and creatively, as they put together mini-quiz cards for each other, preferably from memory. The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical German-English reference list of all 99 verbs. Students find this really useful as a learning support resource, and it comes in very handy for quick vocabulary quizzes too. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in German. It’s also a great way of developing literacy skills in German. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook. There are three differentiated recall challenges: Written Recall Challenge One students write the English verbs from a German prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, German-English. Written Recall Challenge Two again, students write the verbs in English from a German prompt, but the German verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order. Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding German verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It’s really useful for spelling in German too. I encourage students to visit the Ideas, Notes and Next Steps page regularly, reflecting not only on the verbs they feel confident about, but also how they think their skills in listening, speaking, pronouncing German, reading and writing are developing - and equally importantly, what they can reasonably do to keep improving. I always have activities where creative application of language is required too, so that they can use the verbs in real-world contexts, which is essential for progressing in language learning. We also use their notes to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which again is really useful, and a very popular activity with students too. The resource works best when used frequently and regularly - students should store their work carefully in a learning folder or file that they can refer to at any point to support their learning and revision. Students also note down any new, related vocabulary, which builds into a really comprehensive high-frequency German verb vocabulary bank in a very short space of time. Laminate the game cards if you can - they are far more learner-friendly, and the additional prep and expense is definitely worth it, as the cards will last in excellent conditional for years. Print & photocopy an appropriate number of quiz card templates and Reference, Recall & Write books. The books are best copied double-sided, and double-stapled on the left-hand side, rather than a single staple in the top left-hand corner for example. This format is again far more reader and writer-friendly, and can be used more effectively as a learning and reference resource.
