Students can develop their knowledge of the geography and scope of La Francophonie in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the games help them fully develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Les pays francophones. The set contains countries / territories where French is an official language. There are 7 differentiated sets of 2 worksheets, 14 worksheets in total. There is an alphabetical reference list featuring countries, capital cities, continent and national flag. All the worksheets are in random, rather than alphabetical order for maximum challenge. Together, the differentiated challenges ensure students will really embed and consolidate their knowledge of La Francophonie. Spanish-speaking countries Los países hispanohablantes presentation & quiz an instant and comprehensive introduction to 21 countries where Spanish is an official language, which really help my students develop their awareness of the Spanish-speaking world: countries, their location and capital cities and flags. There are 21 countries featured in the quiz. Each country is presented individually on a world map, so that students can see exactly where in the world it lies: this immediately gives a geographical context for students, whose knowledge of world geography may not encompass the Spanish-speaking or wider world. I also use this part of the presentation to work on pronunciation, encouraging students to repeat and read aloud with me - this really does help with memory too. There are 186 slides in the resource, which is non-editable for copyright reasons. ESL EFL INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH ADVANCED ENGLISH CONVERSATION STARTERS This set of English conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced intermediate English to advanced English students. Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning. The questions feature a range of tenses and moods, such as the present tense, present subjunctive, perfect, imperfect, and conditional perfect. There are several questions focusing on i***f + subjunctive + conditional clauses***. There is a significant amount of implicit input on a range of grammatical concepts, particularly the use of tenses. I try to include as broad a range of language as I can in the questions, as the activity is not solely about practicing language, but also about actively learning it. Questions formats are varied, to ensure maximum opportunity to work with the different ways to ask questions in English. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language: this avoids learners simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts. Frequent and regular engagement with the activity brings the best results: with the planning sheet, students can create and prepare increasingly detailed and more complex responses, reflecting their learning progress. I definitely find it useful to read through the questions together as a whole-group, with students offering initial suggested responses. This ensures everyone can actually access the language, and they also benefit a lot from each others’ ideas. As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group. These 60 task cards are perfect for developing Italian language skills in general, as well as for practicing and revising how to tell time in Italian. There are 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. The questions are a straightforward introduction to, and practice of, o’clock and half past the hour in Italian. I generally work with telling time in Italian quite quickly with my beginner Italian students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example. There are two questions: Che ora è? (1 o’clock, 5 past one etc) / Che ore sono? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Vero o falso? and students write either vero or falso - where the answer is falso, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and time creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. It’s also a really popular activity too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other. Laminating is definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as the cards are far more learner-friendly, and stay in excellent condition for a long time, so you’ll be able to recycle them for years. 2-page answer recording sheet. My students generally use their class workbooks to note their answers, though I do use recording sheets for more formal assessment purposes. 2-page answer key, again best printed double-sided, and laminated if possible. For me, answer keys are an integral element to this kind of learning activity. They offer students an additional opportunity to engage with language, and to develop more independence in their learning. They’re also a great teacher time-saver, which is always a good thing! Create a fabulous Spanish look and feel in the learning environment, promoting Spanish as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of the classroom. Telling time is key beginner Spanish vocabulary, which is really useful to know as soon as possible, and students are able to familiarize themselves with how Spanish words ‘look’, and also how sounds are represented in the written form. I use these kinds of flashcards / posters to gradually introduce and work on the specific target language vocabulary we’re working on, and to provide speaking and pronunciation prompts, from the straightforward ¿Qué hora es? to ¿Sí/ no? or ¿Verdadero o falso? questions, which allow us to move to from one-word responses to more complex language, such as negative sentences No, no es medianoche, es mediodía and so on, paying particular attention here to the masculine and feminine. These are really simple ways to really try to get the most from classroom learning decor, using them as visual language prompts, as well as keeping the target vocabulary fresh in students’ minds, and as language refresh and revision by changing the decor at certain points of the school year. I like to have sets of learning displays for students, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell time. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two backgrounds to choose from - Spanish flag or plain, so 56 flashcards / posters in total. These German animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous German look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of German. They introduce learners to a range of animals in German from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how German words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. My younger German students really love the animals posters, and like to compare the German and English words. I’ve found that they also help very young children develop their growing understanding of the animal kingdom. We don’t necessarily learn all the animals, but we do use them for pronunciation and speaking practice, and for memory games too. Students definitely notice the different words for the, and ask why some animals are der, and others are die or das. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender. This set of German conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced beginner German into intermediate German students. Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning. The questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of the past tenses. I include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practicing language, but also about actively learning it. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning. Each card has an image: some of these are specific visual prompts to help students infer meaning; some are more generic images. I do use images as much as possible with this kind of activity, not only to provide the prompt, but also to add to the visual appeal of it, which is a real motivator for learning. I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going. As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group. Twenty vegetables in French, with both words and pictures - I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my Primary French learners, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. Children glue them into their French vocabulary books, or file them in their French vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful French reference bank for both class and home learning. We also discuss which vegetables we know and like, and those we would like to try. Children like to create their own visual vocabulary lists, adding to it as they learn more vocabulary.
