Before we play, I always screen a clear map of Europe, to ensure that students can visualize it in its entirety, the location of individual countries within it, and in relation to each other. This provides an important learning context for students. The quiz opens with general questions about Europe, and then moves on to questions about a range of individual European countries. There are 80 questions across two challenges: Challenge 1: 56 multiple-choice questions, with four response options to choose from. The correct response is in capital letters. Challenge 2: 24 questions in TRUE / FALSE format. Where the answer is false, students should additionally give the correct response. Some of these questions align with the topics / themes in Challenge 1, but some address entirely different ones. I usually work with this challenge after Challenge 1, as I’ve found that it maximises opportunity for learning. Speaking does tend to be quite a challenging skill, particularly for beginner learners, so getting the most from classroom decor to encourage students to speak is really important - they’re a great tool for encouraging students to speak, and to construct sentences, from the very beginning of their Spanish learning. I’ve also found that there can be several countries that students don’t actually know, or have never heard of, and the posters are really useful for helping them develop their general understanding and knowledge of both the Spanish-speaking and wider world. Each banner has a small tag to clip onto a line across the classroom. Laminate the banners if you can, as they hang really well and remain in great condition for years. I’ve used the definite article, as I’ve found that this helps embed the concept of gender in French, and that proper nouns, such as countries, are subject to gender agreement rules too. I use the posters to get students talking in French class too during Talk Time for example - quick questions such as Vrai ou faux ? These Spanish animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous Spanish look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote Spanish as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of Spanish. They introduce learners to a range of animals in Spanish from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarise themselves with how Spanish words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. My younger Spanish students really love the animals posters / flashcards, and like to compare the Spanish and English words. I’ve found that they also help very young children develop their growing understanding of the animal kingdom. We don’t necessarily learn all the animals, but we do use them for pronunciation and speaking practice, and for memory and recall games too. Students definitely notice the different words for a/an, and ask why some animals are un, and others are una. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender. There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which again is a great opportunity to begin to compare Spanish to English. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as orso and lobo. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning.
