Using appositive phrases in your English literature responses will improve the sophistication of your writing. If used correctly, they will impress your examiner. Here are some examples on how to use appositive phrases when writing about the 6 main characters in A Christmas Carol.

An exam-style grade 9 response that would comfortable fit into band 6 that explores how Shakespeare presents Macbeth as an evil/violent character. I have not included the 2019 question or extract but it is available on the AQA website under assessment materials. There is perceptive debate with judicious use of quotations and assured analysis of methods and wider ideas. I advise my students to start their response to Paper 2 Question 5 with an engaging personal anecdote. A grade 9 response to the AQA June 2020 Paper 2 Question 5 about whether or not travel was a waste of time. It starts with a powerful anecdote, has 2 paragraphs arguing the benefits of travel, then it looks at and dismisses the counter argument before reaching a conclusion which links back to the opening anecdote to gain marks for whole text structure and organisation. Vocabulary is sophisticated throughout and punctuation is advanced.

6 Paper 1 Question 5 responses all describing a very hot place - a desert island. This is a useful task for departmental moderation or for getting students to engage with the markscheme to gain a greater appreciation of the style of writing required for the upper bands.
