Types of writing - fiction - syllables in haiku and cinquan

This lesson explores the use of syllables in poetry by investigating haiku and cinquain. The activities allow pupils to learn to count syllables, sort poems into the correct order and identify words with different numbers of syllables. The whiteboard activities will encourage whole class/group discussion, collaboration and participation. The lesson could be used during a unit of work on writing poetry. Use of the whiteboard tools (eg pen, highlighter) would also enable the teacher to address other word-level work associated with nouns/adjectives.

This resource pack is designed to encourage pupils to find interesting alternatives to the verb said. Hopefully this will encourage them to use a variety of interesting verbs, bringing their creative writing to life. The lesson contains: an introductory drag-and-drop activity where pupils consider better alternatives, a main game activity where pupils consider a more exciting alternative to a short piece of dialogue and a short poem/song that might encourage pupils to remember possible said alternatives.

Dafydd Drops a Goal is a poem about rugby. It tells of a young boy dropped to the substitutes' bench during an important cup match. He comes on to play during the dying minutes of the game and saves it with a drop goal. The unit was specifically written to provide pupils, particularly boys, with some challenging material that would perhaps change their attitude towards poetry. Ideal for years 5 and 6.

An interactive whiteboard resource exploring oral expression. Pupils describe images to a partner, constuct an oral story from key words and describe a diary entry, based on events in a day. These activities should teach pupils to be confident in describing pictures and events and improve their creative storytelling. They should also help pupils to understand the differences between speaking to an audience and speaking to a friend, in descriptive language and reporting.
