The story of 5

Learn all about the number 5. This activity introduces pupils to the number 5. Pupils follow a character through a story where she finds five of every item. Pupils then learn how to correctly form the number 5, and learn to recognise the number among other symbols through a series of games and activities. Learning objectives: to use mathematical language in the correct context, to begin to recognise numbers and to begin to match numbers to sight and sound.

Learn some nursey rhymes. Pupils listen to and sing along with some popular nursery rhymes - Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, The Grand Old Duke of York and Baa, Baa Black Sheep. They then complete activities based on the characters and events of the nursery rhymes they have heard.
The Zoo

Identifying animals that live in the zoo helps to develop pupils' understanding of what a zoo is and what animals can be found at a zoo. Some activities will develop and reinforce mathematical knowledge and vocabulary. Pupils will have opportunities to sort and classify. The final screen teaches pupils the rhyme Young Macpherson had a zoo, which is sung to the tune of Old MacDonald. A number of worksheets are also provided to reinforce the whiteboard activities.

Activities include matching upper case letters with lower case ones and asking pupils to punctuate sentences correctly. The full stop is introduced and pupils have the opportunity to punctuate sentences with them. Pupils consolidate their learning on paper using the worksheets provided. This resource pack can be used to address sections 2.7 of English and 2.4 of the Welsh writing PoS of the national curriculum for Wales

Dafydd Drops a Goal is a poem about rugby. It tells of a young boy dropped to the substitutes' bench during an important cup match. He comes on to play during the dying minutes of the game and saves it with a drop goal. The unit was specifically written to provide pupils, particularly boys, with some challenging material that would perhaps change their attitude towards poetry. Ideal for years 5 and 6.
