This resource and lesson plan pack has been designed and created for those who would like to explore diversity with a class of children through a series of workshops designed to encourage thought and conversations.
Citizenship lessons are sometimes hard to teach when you’re not sure where to start! However, here we have given you an idea of how to begin exploring some tricky concepts with children of a Key Stage 2 age and above. The workshop and resources are part of a series of 6 workshops that we have created to help inspire you to talk to your children about, and they can be done as stand-alone activity sessions or as a series to ensure that your children can fully understand and appreciate the concepts of equality and diversity.
This specific pack explores the initial ideas that children have about the world, but more specifically the people in it. The resources for all of these activities are included in this pack and should hopefully challenge some of the ideas that children have gathered. The idea of the journals throughout each workshop was to allow children to write how they feel and what they think about the new concepts that they have explored (and also to help them remember if you space out the workshops!)
We hope you enjoy it!

This specific pack explores the opportunities that children have and how it can impact where they get in life. The children will also continue to explore the similarities and differences between people and how to respect diversity through the opportunities that they are given. The resources for these activities are mostly linked to this pack, however the containers of sugar and salt for the starting activity will need to be provided by you.
We hope you enjoy it!

This specific pack explores the stereotypes associated with gender/sex and how we can be more accepting of others, regardless of their gender/sex. The biggest resource for this workshop that you will need to source is a picture book called ‘Princess Smartypants’ (it doesn’t cost too much on amazon!)
We hope you enjoy it!

This specific pack explores how to understand emotions and how to apply empathy to different situations. The use of videos within the workshop should allow children to feel engaged with the new learning! We would recommend an entire afternoon for this workshop to ensure that it can be explored to its full capacity, or splitting the activities into two sessions exploring emotions in one and empathy in a second session. The resources for these activities are linked, and resources 1a and 1b are both within the resource labelled 1.
We hope you enjoy it!

This specific pack explores the picture book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ (which you will need source yourself). This workshop aims to collate all the knowledge that the children have learnt through the workshops. Although the story itself seems to be aimed at younger years, the messages and inferences behind it are much deeper and (we believe) appropriate for KS2 and lower KS3 children. The resources for these activities (bar the book!) are all linked in the pack. The idea for this activity was also to share the crayons with another class either through a link or with another local school to help children make connections with a variety of children to promote the theme of diversity.
We hope you enjoy it!

These were designed to be used in Year 2 Reading Records as a way to encourage the children to respond and think about their reading.
The stickers are on a template which should print onto a page of stickers so they are then ready to use.
Questions include:
Which character is your favourite in the book and why?
What do you predict will happen next?
What book or books does this remind you of and why?
Summarise three things that have happened so far.

This specific pack explores what children’s rights are and what they mean/can impact on. The document drawn up by the UNCRC is applicable for all children under the age of 18, and they are all entitled to know what they are and how they can stay safe and show another respect through accepting and showing acceptance of all. The resources for these activities are attached and labelled as in the lesson plan to help you find each resource for each activity.
We hope you enjoy it!
