Fractals, Imaginary and Complex Numbers

(12)
4 lessons taking students through processes required to understand the Mandelbrot set and fractals. Students should already know how to simplify surds and expand a double bracket. They will learn about imaginary and complex numbers, Iteration and Argand diagrams. The spreadsheet can be used to help map out points that satisfy the Mandelbrot set. Aimed at very high ability KS4 students. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :) (and thanks to danwalker on TES for the idea for the spreadsheet!)
Midpoints of Quadrilaterals
Owen134866Owen134866

Midpoints of Quadrilaterals

(7)
Lesson where students learn to calculate the midpoint between two coordinates, but then apply this to sides of shapes on coordinate axes and discuss what they notice. Could be extended to more polygons and the more able can try to explain the 'why' behind the patterns they find. Completing the Square
Owen134866Owen134866

Completing the Square

(14)
2 lesson sequence on Completing the Square. The first lesson pupils are introduced to the pattern and how to rewrite expressions under various conditions. The second lesson pupils actually use the process to solve equations. This has been made to go with our IGCSE textbooks but I imagine most courses structure it in a similar way! Prime Decomposition, HCF and LCM
Owen134866Owen134866

Prime Decomposition, HCF and LCM

(66)
Calculating the HCF and LCM of 2 (or more) numbers by using Prime Decomposition and Venn Diagrams. Includes some worded questions and follows on from the other Prime Decomposition lesson I have on the TES site. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Maths Mechanics 3 - Set of lesson powerpoints
Owen134866Owen134866

Maths Mechanics 3 - Set of lesson powerpoints

(43)
Set of powerpoints to help with the teaching of the A-level Mechanics 3 course. These have been mapped to the edexcel textbooks in a similar way to my other A-level stuff and have chapter tests made up of old exam questions, with mark schemes included. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Frustums
Owen134866Owen134866

Frustums

(30)
Lesson on calculating the Volume of Frustums, using similar shapes to work out the height of the part that has been removed. A challenging lesson for top ability GCSE pupils. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Tree Diagrams
Owen134866Owen134866

Tree Diagrams

(7)
This lesson is intended as an introduction to Tree diagrams. In it, pupils see how Tree diagrams can be used to show different combinations of events, and can therefore be used to calculate probabilities. There are no probabilities on the diagrams at this point, this idea can be introduced at a later date. The worksheet has a variety of questions, with answers included. Iteration and Square Roots
Owen134866Owen134866

Iteration and Square Roots

(3)
In this lesson, students learn what iteration is and see an example of how it was used to calculate square roots of non-square numbers. There is an explanation of the notation involved and students get to try the process out for themselves. Could be used as an introduction to the topic. The Sine and Cosine rules
Owen134866Owen134866

The Sine and Cosine rules

(20)
Powerpoints to help with the teaching of the Sine rule, Cosine rule and the Area of a Triangle using Sine. I have included explanations of how the rules are derived in case your class are interested. Also in the Area of a Triangle using Sine powerpoint, I included an example of using it to calculate a formula for Pi! (Which a lot of the kids always seem to write down!). If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on TES! :)
Pythagoras Theorem and Coordinates
Owen134866Owen134866

Pythagoras Theorem and Coordinates

(11)
Lesson on using Pythagoras' Theorem to find the distance between coordinates. Includes quite a few extended and reversed questions and should be challenging for pupils. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
FDPR 8 lesson sequence
Owen134866Owen134866

FDPR 8 lesson sequence

(2)
This is an eight lesson sequence designed to review fractions and percentages work, and lead onto using ratio in problem solving. Every lesson has a starter, explanation and plenary in a powerpoint, along with a worksheet with a variety of difficulty of questions (some taken from the UK Maths challenges), all with answers. It is a part of a much bigger library of resources that can be found here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/maths-free-resource-library-6439409 If you liked this resource then please check out my other things on the TES site!
Simultaneous Equations Graphically
Owen134866Owen134866

Simultaneous Equations Graphically

(26)
This lesson will show students how plotting two linear equations in x and y allows them to solve simultaneous equations. The powerpoint has a full explanation as the starter and there is a sheet of questions for students to practice. Before doing this task they should have covered algebraic versions of simultaneous equations, as well as linear graph plotting. Which gives the biggest answer?
Owen134866Owen134866

Which gives the biggest answer?

(8)
Students have to try and work out which expression will give the biggest answer when a value for x is substituted in. Of course, it isn't that simple and they find that the answer varies depending on the value used. It is a good opportunity for them to consider how drawing graphs can help find whereabouts solutions might lie. I have also included some blank autograph axes which can be used to plot the graphs more dynamically and find what regions are highest for each. Extension questions could include finding expressions where one is always bigger, one which is higher above a specific value for x etc. Lots of opportunity for extension - students could also use Autograph themselves to experiment! Equations involving X Squared
Owen134866Owen134866

Equations involving X Squared

(5)
Lesson on solving equations with an x squared term in. However, these do not also contain an x term meaning they do not need to be solved by factorisation. The idea is that pupils practise solving these as they would a linear equation, but appreciate the possibility of more than 1 answer when they square root. Changing Recurring Decimals into Fractions
Owen134866Owen134866

Changing Recurring Decimals into Fractions

(23)
Two lessons of material on the above topic. Pupils should already have covered changing a terminating decimal into a fraction (eg) 0.7, 0.18 etc) before they start this. Also depending on the group it might be a good idea to get them to discover the 'ninths&' patterns for themselves! If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
The Konigsberg Problem
Owen134866Owen134866

The Konigsberg Problem

(6)
An investigation into traversable networks, centred around solving the Konigsberg problem. Pupils decide whether a number of networks are traversable or not and then look for patterns in their results. Includes everything you need to just do the lesson! If you like this please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Areas of Flags
Owen134866Owen134866

Areas of Flags

(88)
3 Lessons of Powerpoints and Worksheets covering the areas of Rectangles, Triangles, Parallelograms and Trapeziums. The pupils have to find areas of different colours on national flags which are all the above area, and also using other mathematical topics. You will need to write on the powerpoints quite a bit on the starters, plenaries and examples! If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! Thank you to @1hannahjones for making a number of corrections and clarifications! See here an extra lesson for circles! https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/areas-of-flags-with-circles-11164206
Isometric Drawing
Owen134866Owen134866

Isometric Drawing

(34)
Pupils learn about plan, front and side elevations and how to draw objects on isometric paper. The worksheet has an investigation into making objects with 5 cubes, as well as some challenging questions on building objects based on their elevations, with as few cubes as possible. Please note that the questions in Section B and the 'impossible shapes to make' are not my own and have been taken from other sheets found online. I have also included a word document of isometric paper for 'emergency' use :) If you liked this resource then please check out my other resources on TES! https://www.tes.com/resources/search/?authorId=2095097
