This lesson examines the case study of the Great Plague and has a focus on a comparison between the events of 1665 with the Black Death. The lesson includes: Clear learning aims and achievements Recap task: A recap of the 1348 Black Death quiz and sorting activity Starter activity: Sources about the Great Plague. One is an inference and the other a text taken from the National archives about the rules given out by Charles II. Background information: Baic facts about the Great Plague. In this lesson, students will examine the challenges that Edward VI faced as a young Tudor king as well as the expectations he had as a new Tudor monarch. The outcome of the lesson will be students writing a letter to advise Edward VI about these challenges. Background Information: Interesting and well presented information about the succession of Edward VI after the death of Henry VIII **Task 1: **Students identify and select their top 5 qualities they believe a Tudor monarch should have. Task 2: Students discuss and then note down the various challenges Edward faced as a young King of England. This lesson asks the students to study the Berlin Refugee Crisis and link it to Khrushchev’s Berlin Ultimatum of 1958. STARTER: Students recap the differences between East Germany and West Germany by organising a mixed up set of facts into a table. RECAP: A filling in the missing term task to help students recap their knowledge of the Berlin Blockade. the Berlin Airlift and the official division of Berlin into East and West. BACKGROUND: An animated ad easy to follow narrative of the key events of the Berlin Ultimatum with clear maps of Germany and Berlin, photographs and key terms (see image). TASK 1: Students to complete a w/s covering the timeline of events and explaining them. TASK 2: Students to advise John F Kennedy about how to deal with the Soviet Union. Writing frame included. This bumper lesson contains everything you need to teach the causes, importance, events and consequences of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956. A fact sheet is also included for students to use in place of a text book. **Recap: **A task where students are asked to look at a timeline of Cold War events so far and discuss which events will have caused the most amount of tension between the USA and the Soviet Union. Task 1: Short term and long term consequences table. Task 2: A narrative account storyboard which can easily be used alongside the fact sheet. Task 3: Students organise the events into either causes, events or consequences (see image). This will help students identify a consequence for the exam question. **Task 4: **A comprehension sheet with additional extension task if needed asking students to explain why the USA did not support the uprising. **EXAM QUESTION: **Explain two consequences of the Hungarian Uprising 1956 {8} - Students given two example sections to analyse and then expected to write their own. This lesson covers the actions and Presidency of Ronald Reagan during the time known as the Second Cold War. Students will examine his tougher policy towards the Soviet Union and focus their attention on his ‘Star Wars’ Programme (Strategic Defence Initiative) and its importance and consequences at the time. **Starter: **Students are given 10 technological developments of the 1980s and from the descriptions, have to identify what they were. This will give the students historical context to the 1980s and the amount of technological and scientific progress at the time. **Background: **Students will then be briefly taken through the background developments which cover Reagan’s main policies towards the Soviet Union and the increasing ‘war of words’ between the two sides. **Task Sheet: **(See image) this sheet questions the student’s understanding of the main developments of Reagan’s Second Cold War and specifically the Strategic Defence Initiative. There are 13 questions in total on the worksheet which require a variety of skills such as source analysis and explanation of importance and consequences. **Recap: **Students are given a table of 8 key terms from the lesson. Their task is to write a suitable question to achieve the key term as an answer. This task can be printed off for a written worksheet or simply displayed on the board. Extension Tasks: Two political cartoons are shown about the Strategic Defence Initiative. Students need to analyse their meaning. This lesson allows students to use a wide range of sources to investigate the events of the Christmas truce during 1914. Students will use evidence from the diaries and letters of soldiers from both sides who experienced the ceasefire and build a picture of what happened. They will then use this knowledge to evaluate the usefulness and historical accuracy of modern interpretations of the truce such as adverts, films and music videos. This is a fully resources lesson which includes a warmup, starter task, engaging background information, various learning activities, challenge tasks and learning reviews. The lesson includes the following: Slide 1: Title slide Slide 2: Outline of the main lesson aims Slide 3: As you enter warm up discussion tasks – what is a truce and why might a truce happen? Slide 4: Starter Task – Analysis of an illustration of the truce from the London Illustrated News, 1915. Slide 5-8: Activity 1 – History Detectives! Students should be placed in pairs or groups and given the two packs of sources. They then record their findings about the truce on a printable worksheet also provided on slide 8. Students will first analyse a choice of sources written by soldiers who experienced the front line.
