Reading comprehension passage and questions relating to the Greensboro sit-in (led by four African American students) which was part of the Civil Rights Movement. It was not the first sit-in protest but the most effective. This product also includes other associated tasks and optional map work and watching video with question sheets to complete. Content: Reading comprehension passage 10 Questions to answer – evidence in text and students’ own views Word work: Match words to sentences definition activity Word Search with Answer Key Optional map activity Optional video link (6.21 mins duration) with question sheets (2 pages) The reading passage introduces students to sit-ins as part of the nonviolent protests during the 1950/1960s to challenge the United States Jim Crow Laws. Students look for text-based evidence and also give their own views. Word work The matching activity entails students reading sentences and then matching the definition to the correct word. Word Search: To reinforce vocabulary found in the text. Map activity This is optional - North Carolina has already been identified on the map as one of the southern states that passed the Jim Crow laws soon after the Reconstruction period. Students find out which other southern states did the same then color or shade in the areas on the map. Her brave action paved the way for integration in schools. Topic can be used in Black history and Women’s history months. It can be used in guided reading. The story can be read aloud to the class. The aim of each reading comprehension is to show the differences and similarities between these Puritan sects. You could use this resource as additional information to your Thanksgiving lesson or history lesson on the Puritans in England. This resource focuses on the legend of Saint Patrick and myths. The PowerPoint Presentation includes whole class activities and there are questions at the end of the presentation. Children are encouraged to participate in discussion about the different myths and legends in relation to St Patrick/St Patrick’s Day. The resource contains:- 32 Slides PowerPoint Presentation Flexible detailed lesson plans covering 2 lessons (includes learning objectives and plenaries/closing session). Each PowerPoint slide is referred to in the lesson plans. Lesson 1: Children link the shamrock St Patrick is holding to Irish myths, including leprechaun costumes that they might see on St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Learn the difference between myths and legends. They look at mythical beasts and describing words and phrases. Differentiated worksheets - With support - LA draw their own picture of Cyclops and label the parts with adjectives. MA/HA - Draw own picture of Cyclops or create their own mythical creature and label it with adjectives and and use simple sentences to describe in more detail, e.g. its body was as big as a house. Extension: Complete Patrick’s Day Factsheet (colour in/4 questions). Lesson 2: Previous is lesson reviewed. This lesson focuses on the retelling of myths and sequencing events. This is an assembly presentation on the topic of Guy Fawkes and bonfire night celebrated on 5 November in the UK. The presentation can also be used as part of a lesson as there are 42 slides with optional follow-up activities. Depending on how long your assembly is, you can choose what to include in as the presentation is editable. It is divided into four sections: • Celebrating with fireworks • Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot • How we celebrate today and fireworks code • Ending assembly with our freedom to practise our own religion and a prayer. You can begin your assembly from Slide 11 which covers the gunpowder plot and why 5th November is a special day. The presentation contains a glossary and the list of conspirators. The follow-up activities relate to what they have learnt in assembly or if using as a lesson, to consolidate their learning. This is a fun problem-solving activity for St. Valentine’s Day as an introduction to using glyphs in the shape of whole and half-shaped hearts to work out addition and subtraction sums. Aimed at: Reception/KS1 Content: - 12 Slide PowerPoint Presentation - 3 Addition Worksheets - 4 Subtraction Worksheets - Answer Sheets Start the lesson by asking students if they know what hieroglyphs and/or glyphs are and who used them and why they were used instead of the number system we use today. Slides 3-4 The presentation lesson begins by briefly explaining how the Aztecs and the Mayans used hieroglyphs/glyphs to represent numbers and then the class have a go at working out the numbers. Main lesson Slides 5 – 13 The lesson goes on to explain using whole hearts and half-shaped hearts as glyphs and then using these symbols to solve addition and take away sums. It includes whole class activity and detailed examples of how the students work out the answers. Remind the students that the number of half-shaped hearts tells you how many whole hearts to take away. Students can use different methods to work out the problems, for example, if the students see 7 whole hearts, they add them up to make 7 as one whole heart is equal to 1. For subtraction, if the children see 7 whole hearts and 4 half-shaped hearts, they hold up 7 fingers and then fold down 4 fingers to take away the 4 half-shaped hearts. Consolidation There are three worksheets for students to add up the hearts and four worksheets on taking away. Answer sheets included.
