Secondary students participate in a kinesthetic activity that reviews distance in relation to rate and time as well as a study of slope in relation to a contextual example. Students will use a three-dimensional experience to connect on two-dimensional space. Student reporting sheet, group observation sheet, review probes and class power point are provided. This resource is good for students with dyslexia and language-based learning deficiencies.

The Pythagorean Theorem is one of the foundational studies in the secondary years. It is one of the mathematical formulas that many people remember from their mathematical journey in school. Even the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz took a stab at the Pythagorean Theorem when he got his diploma. The Pythagorean Theorem, once introduced in middle school, serves as the foundation for the distance formula, the special right triangle ratios, as well as the unit circle in Trigonometry. Typically students are simply given the formula and told to use it. In this study, students investigate and discover the relationships for themselves. A different approach to a proof is offered. It is a dissection proof. Other famous historical proofs are referenced as well, even one from a Unites States President! In this 30+ page packet (plus powerpoint) there are two different literacy connections, opportunities for writing, two different investigations for discovery of the Pythagorean Theorem, a dissection proof, activities for vocabulary, a graphic organizer for students to organize their findings in, several tasks that allow students to think deeper about ideas, and three application probes. Directions for performing the dissection proof on Geometer’s Sketchpad® is included but can be easily adapted for the TI-Nspire®. Centimeter paper, engineering graph paper, and color masters for the dissection proof are also included. A powerpoint for classroom use during the study of this topic is also included. This collection of activities and investigations can be used from middle school through review for Advanced Algebra and Trig.

“Difficulty with fractions (including decimals and percents) is pervasive and is a major obstacle to further progress in mathematics, including algebra.” (National Math Advisory Panel, 2008.) Fractions are the earliest topic in school mathematics where educators agree that students fail and teachers struggle to instruct. This activity Packet is a combination of all other Pattern Block Activity Packets, Pattern Block Fractions: Investigations with Basic Blocks, Pattern Block Fractions: Investigations with Basic Blocks and Double Hex and Chevron, Getting to Know Your Pattern Blocks, Addition/Subtraction with Pattern Blocks: Investigation 1, Addition/Subtraction with Pattern Blocks: Investigation 2 This activity packet is good for students with dyslexia and language-based learning deficiencies.

Modular Math Functions Packet Levels 1 to 6

Working toward functional fluency is a major goal of secondary mathematicians. As students progress through the six levels of Modular Math: Functions they will have opportunities to develop the definition for a function as well as to work with and understand the notation and symbolic representations for various functions. Technology will be incorporated as they investigate both linear functions and quadratic functions. Verbal, one-to-one, onto, and diagrammatic representations of functions will be studied as well as composition. Modular Mathematics is an alternative for students and teachers who would like something different or something additional to support the building of function fluency in secondary mathematicians. This is not your usual collection of notes, thoughts, writing assignments or activities. A student journal template is provided as well as a concept exploration graphic organizer. There are six levels in the unit. Level 1: Introduction, Level 2: Graphs, Level 3: Verbal Descriptions; Linear Functions, Level 4: One-to-One Functions; Onto Functions, Level 5: Composition of Functions, and Level 6: Quadratics. Glyphs A Different Approach:Secondary

There are many uses for glyphs. They are often used for students to share information about themselves. While the glyphs are being created, students are engaged with other topics such as counting, literacy, geometric shapes, etc. They are especially popular with elementary teachers. But they do have a place in the secondary grades. A traditional snowman glyph with secondary math legend and template is included as an example of an adaptation for high school from a primary level activity. Extending the idea of “reading” a glyph and connecting it to graphing functions creates some interesting and rich tasks for students. The following set of glyph templates can be used in centers or during instruction to help develop students’ observation skills, logical reasoning and problem solving skills and as formative assessment probes. There is one set with sunglasses or a blank set of circles to create faces and hair, etc. of choice. This resource is good for children with Dyslexia and language-based learning deficiencies. Multiple Representation Match Frayer Set and Rectangle

Whether a young mathematician is developing number sense or a secondary mathematician is developing functional fluency, multiple representations play a pivotal role. The Multiple Representation Activities resources are available to support building these fluencies. Also, using an adaptation of the classic Frayer model applied to mathematical representations supports building these fluencies at the point of instruction. The Multiple Representation Model can be used as a note-taking guide, as an assessment probe, or as a spiraling review. Five representations are given for each model. There is also a set that is given two per page to facilitate use in The Mathematicians’ Notebook. Another representation resource is the Multiple Representation Rectangle. This allows several spaces in which students can work with the various representations. There is also a two per page version, although the regular version does fit in The Mathematician’s Notebook. Vocabulary is one of the foundations for developing understanding for any subject area and mathematics is no exception. For many students, words used in mathematics may not be familiar in context. Students need many opportunities to use vocabulary in their daily work. Providing additional opportunities to review vocabulary in a learning station, center, or small group will help support students who are challenged by the language of mathematics.
