Based on the popular game show ‘Pointless’, this resource is perfect for use as a whole lesson resource, enrichment option, or revision tool. Editable, so that you can change to any other topic or change questions. (I’ve also added a blank template so that you can make your own games from scratch). Containing almost 30 slides of sound clips, interesting tasks, and suitably challenging questions, this resource is effective at both promoting engagement and enhancing learning. There are several full rounds of questions to build or revisit knowledge of characters, plot, and themes in ‘Pride and Prejudice.’

A View from the Bridge: Miller's Language Devices!
This interesting and highly-stimulating lesson enables students to demonstrate a developed, sustained understanding of the language devices utilised in Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge. In particular, students engage analytically with Miller’s use of language at the beginning of Act II, in which Eddie Carbone appears to lose control over his actions. Students examine how similes, rhetorical questions, imperative commands, and other language features serve to highlight his descent into desperation.
The lesson follows a clear, logical, bite-size learning journey, which guides students towards differentiated learning objectives. Over the course of this journey, they become able to:
- Define and provide examples for each of the relevant language devices;
- Identify each of the language devices in short sentences, and begin to comment upon their effect;
- Understand some of Miller’s intentions behind writing the play;
- Critically engage with Miller’s use of language devices at the end of the Act Two, including the events leading up to Eddie’s call to the Immigration Office;
-Peer assess each other’s learning attempts.
This resource pack includes:
- A visually engaging whole-lesson PowerPoint presentation;;
- Paper copies and online links to the extract needed for the lesson (beginning section of Act Two);

I am David - Anne Holm - Chapter 8 - Double Lesson!
This engaging and thought-provoking double-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of the chapter 8 of Anne Holm’s ‘I Am David.’ In this final chapter of the text, David almost runs into trouble but is aided by King the Dog. He then completes the final leg of his miraculous journey.
The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through:
-Retrieving information;
-Inferring and deducing hidden meanings;
-Summarising events from the text.
The sessions include a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference, explanation and deeper thinking activities. A clear, colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides students through the learning. The lesson also includes an answer key for the retrieval questions, and model answer ideas for the more detailed responses. A storyboard template is also provided (in both Word and PDF) to support the main deeper thinking task.
There’s a lot here (18 slides filled with questions and activities) so I would recommend breaking into two lessons. The lessons are suitable for students in either upper KS2 or lower KS3, depending upon the individual context of the school and students. I originally used them with year 6 children.
The Russia-Ukraine War - Reading Comprehension Session!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills, whilst enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of the Russia-Ukraine War, through reading an informative and age-appropriate non-fiction text.
The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language.
The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The text has been heavily adapted from a from a web article (cited) to ensure that it is clear and age-appropriate. It is provided in both PDF and Word, so that you can make any additional alterations should you wish to.
The session is best suited for children in upper KS2 or lower KS3, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.

This engaging and informative lesson enables students to make clear, detailed and well-informed interpretations of the eponymous title character’s development throughout Jane Eyre. In particular, students develop their background understanding of how Jane’s character is introduced, before plotting her development against the different stages of protagonists in Bildungsroman novels.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which students learn through:
Defining the key term ‘bildungsroman’ and understanding the key stages of the bildungsroman genre;
Reading selected extracts from the text and answering comprehension questions about the introduction to Jane’s bildungsroman journey;
Plotting Jane’s development against the progressive bildungsroman phases;

The Woman in Black: Jennet Humfrye and Nathaniel Drablow!
This engaging and informative lesson enables students to make precise and sustained interpretations regarding the sub-plot of Jennet Humfrye and Nathaniel Drablow in The Woman in Black. Through close analysis of extracts of the sub-plot, they consider how the woman in black herself came to being, and learn her ghastly purpose.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
- Reading and understanding the sub-plot of Jennet Humfrye and Nathaniel Drablow;
- Understanding and comprehending the key themes and ideas raised in the sub-plot;

Ozymandias Comprehension Activities Booklet!
This 16-page resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s war poem ‘Ozymandias.’ Teachers have found them particularly useful throughout teaching, or for exam revision or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of students towards meeting the key English Literature assessment objectives - suitable for all examining bodies. Students have found these resources extremely engaging, and it is clearly highlighted within each task regarding which assessment strands the task is designed to demonstrate.
Activities within the booklet include:
‘Analysing Context’ - helping students to ‘Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written.’

This engaging and informative lesson enables students to make detailed and precise interpretations of the character of Abel Magwitch in Great Expectations, through developing a deep understanding of the key features of the 19th Century criminal justice system. In particular, students learn about how criminals were perceived and treated in Victorian society, and link this knowledge to Abel Magwitch’s introduction, development, and demise in the novel.
