Social Media and Mental Health Social Emotional Learning (PowerPoint, Printables & Discussion Cards)

(0)
Are you concerned about the effects of social media on the emotional health of your students and looking to develop a responsive classroom by incorporating Social Emotional Learning? It is impossible for our young people to completely avoid social media. It’s a world that most of us teachers or parents didn’t grow up with in our own youth, so it’s challenging for adults to guide students appropriately in this arena. As we know, social media has a significant effect on mental health so it’s important for students to be aware of this and develop healthy ways to use this platform, as it’s not going away any time soon. This resource will help you guide your students the right way. It has been designed to make it as easy to deliver as possible! It includes a structured PowerPoint that guides your class through discussions about social media and the effects it can have on mental health and how to have a positive experience online. No prior knowledge or experience from you is required! On top of this, the PowerPoint text is editable so you can modify the content to suit your students’ needs, should you wish. Also included are bonus graphic organizers which are supplementary to the PowerPoint: they’re not a requirement, but they work as a helpful tool for students to record their thoughts in an aesthetically pleasing way that can then be used for bulletin board displays etc. You will also find a set of discussion task cards to spark conversation and thoughts on social media: these can be printed off for each group of students, or they can be used in whole class discussion, small group, or even for 1:1 counselling. Product includes: • 31 slide PowerPoint • 3 printables of graphic organizers • 4 scenarios to analyze • 24 discussion cards Students will learn: • The true point of social media • What social media is most often used for instead • To reflect on why they use social media • Why and how social media can affect mental health • The effects of comparing themselves to people on social media • The reality of why people really post what they post [VIDEO] • The reasons people obsessing about likes and followers • Why likes and followers create false confidence • What triggers affect them on social media • Alternative ways they can respond to triggers on social media • How they can use their social media to make the world a better place • …and more! I have found teaching this unit is effective in morning meetings with tutor / advisory classes or as whole life skills lessons too, depending on how much time you can allocate. It is such a valuable topic to talk to our students about. Thank you for all you do to make a difference in young peoples’ lives! Great for Social Skills, Life skills and PSHE (Physical, Social, Health Education) lessons.
