Lesson 1 - What is a Computer System? A lesson designed for students to understand and be able to define what a computer system is. Pupils will be looking at the different types of basic computer systems, used in and around school and discussing the different types of tasks you can use a computer system for. This is to encourage pupils to develop their understanding of why we need computers and how they can be used in the real world. A set of 7 quick, starter activities to set your students off recapping the keyterms and learning from the previous lesson. The starter activities cover the following topics: Computer Systems - label the basic components of a computer system. Ethical Issues - Identify the issue for each scenario. Flowcharts - label the flowchart shapes. Input and Output - Describe the input and output devices. Network Topologies - Label the network topology. Storage Devices - Label the characteristic for each of the storage device statements. The Von Neumman Architecture - label the components/registers on the diagram. Each starter activity is printable or for use on the PC and comes in a range of abilities; low (with prompts/support) to high (no additional prompting). Each presentation includes a copy of the teacher answers too. The activities are designed to be quick, recap tasks help encourage students to keep revising what they have learnt.

Pupils will be identifying basic devices, explaining what they are used for within a computer system and then using this knowledge to think about how computer systems are used in different industries e.g. Airports, supermarkets and hospitals.
