This lesson includes a range of activities to help students engage with the language and structure presented in this chapter. Activities are varied and include elements of debate, discussion, creative and written tasks to suit all learners. The lesson concludes with an extract from the Chapter with questions based on the 19th Century Fiction paper questions, but that also tease out some excellent quotations on the characters of Godfrey and Nancy. This resource bundle includes an Assembly based on the Holocaust Memorial Trust theme of ‘the power of words’ and considers both the ethos of the Trust in honouring survivors whilst also focusing on the importance of ‘words’ to ensure discrimination and prejudice are eliminated from our society. This assembly is interactive with a link to a video about the latest recordings of Eva Schloss and offers students some practical ways to get involved with Holocaustian projects post assembly. The assembly is fully scripted and ready to use and is accompanied by a handout about some of the projects mentioned in the assembly for tutors to explore during tutor/PSHE time for potential ongoing individual and whole school involvement.

This resource takes students through extract analysis using the mark scheme (Eduqas) and then blends into a guided full essay response based on the concept of 'Authorial Morality', paralleling the exam structure. Other activities include a character focus on Godfrey and separately Silas and Eppie alongside consideration of structural devices used in this part of the novel.

This resource is an original constructed paper in the style of the AQA (9-1) exam papers based on the novel ‘The Children of Men’ by P D James. This novel considers a futuristic society in which the last generation has been born and provides a fascinating extract for analysis, particularly for reluctant boys! This is a choice novel to study to begin to introduce the demands of the GCSE (9-1) curriculum. The narrative is highly relevant to teenagers and wider societal issues and throws up a huge range of opportunities for close analysis.
