Year 1 ICT - X3 differentiated worksheets
Symbols - cut out to play snap or pairs.
Lower - 4 symbols to discuss and match
Middle - 7 symbols to discuss and match
Top - write independently
Includes a powerpoint to introduce herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
I then made dinosaur poo using oats and brown paint. To make herbivore poo, I added leaves and twigs. To make carnivore poo, I added pasta shells as bones and fur. To make omnivore, I added leaves twigs, pasta shells and fur.
I left 6 foil wrappers around the classroom for children to work in groups to investigate. They used magnifying glasses to investigate further, and they had the worksheet on a clipboard.
Our genre was instruction writing.
Each task is differentiated.
Introduction - use a big piece of sugar paper and ask the children to tell me what to write. We talked about the features that we needed to include (title, numbered points, pictures to illustrate what happened).
3 tasks - Instructions to make bread, instructions to plant potatoes, instructions to plant onions
MAT - copy from a model/word mat/independent writing
Top group - use a word mat to find the correct bossy verb. Fill in the gap. Draw pictures to illustrate each step.
Middle group - cut out each step and stuck them in order. Draw pictures to illustrate each step.
Bottom group - I took photos of each activity and they cut them out and glued them in order. A member of staff wrote what they said about each picture.
Year 1 topic - Dinosaurs
Ice experiment worksheet - I froze dinosaurs in balloons. The children chose where to put them inside and outside of the classroom. We predicted which dinosaur egg would melt first and why.
Various letters from ‘Dino’ - our cuddly toy who sent us letters and gave us challenges to complete throughout the topic.
Maths worksheets - non-standard units. All differentiated. Templates are provided, which need to be cut out. I made dinosaur footprints in our outdoor area using soil.
Discussion writing - we talked about whether we would like to have a dinosaur as a pet today. Differentiated worksheets/templates to help children structure their for and against opinions.
What happens next - YouTube Video - my children watched the video and talked about what may happen next. They wrote the end of the story in their writing books.
Year 1 Science - Hearing/Ears
This was a part of our science topic ‘The Senses’. We completed these 3 differentiated worksheets/anticipation grids to activate prior knowledge. Half way through our topic, we completed the ‘expanding statements’ as children had a better understanding of hearing. We then completed the beaker experiement. Children predicted what the beakers would sound like when struck when they were full and empty. We had been learning about low and high pitch.
Sorting 2 digit and 3 digit numbers to 50 and 100 - differentiated.
Split up teen numbers. Left as a template, as I wrote my own numbers to differentiate.
Addition and subtraction worksheet/challenge for maths area - independent task.
Differentiated addition and subtraction worded problems.
Money - make a spider diagram of all the ways you can make 15p and 50p. My year 1s used numicon shapes. MAT started using multiplication, such as 5 lots of 10p make 50p (5x10=50).
Reception Worksheets - Cornerstones Topic - ‘What’s that sound?’
Instruction Writing - how to play a triangle PDF
3 differentiated worksheets/activities
Top group - use the writing template to scaffold writing. Children write independently using the word mat to start with bossy verbs. Draw pictures to illustrate writing.
Middle group - Draw pictures to illustrate writing. Children just need to choose the correct bossy verb to include at the start of their sentences. Word mat included.
Lower group - cut and stick activity. Children could draw their own pictures to illustrate the writing for further differentiation.
PDF & Editable Word document included
Flashcards of repeating patterns with 2D shapes to use in the enhanced provision as a stimulus to encourage the children to either copy or make their own repeating patterns.
Cutting skills activity for a TA task or in the provision. Children need to colour in then cut out the 2D shape.
Worksheet - look for the 2D shapes in the top half of the page. Write the correct number of shapes in the box.
Worksheet - 2D shape hunt record answers in a table (Differentiated for 3 ability groups).
Worksheet - tick the correct shape. Staff member to read out the sentence. E.g.‘Tick the circle’. Children need to search for the circle and tick it.
Recognising capital letters - highlight the letters that they recognise. Easy indicator of what letters to work on.
Reading zero to twenty. Tick when children are able to read these key words.
I do these assessments at the end of each full term. I then make groups of children to focus on similar sounds/numbers.
There is also a differentiated follow up maths worksheet for children to practise reading the numbers zero to twenty.
3 Differentiated Worksheets - Reception/Early Years
What’s that sound?
1 - 4 sounds
2 - 6 sounds
3 - 8 sounds
I had a feely bag with different instruments and classroom resources inside. I used one resource at a time. I shook the bag for the children to listen to the sound. My lower ability children drew pictures and I scribed for them (listen to 4 sounds). My middle group drew pictures and initial sounds of what they thought the sound was (listen to 6 sounds). My top ability group drew pictures and spelled phonetically (listen to 8 sounds). MAT wrote in full sentences.
I used some instruments such as bells, drums, a triangle; as well as classroom resources such as pencils, rulers, crayons. Children thought that pencils sounded like claves. They also thought wooden building blocks sounded like claves. We talked about the material that they are made out of. I also used crisps, marbles, and numicon shapes.
