We also have a range of resources to support learning in history. I was a teacher for over 20 years so know from first-hand experience how engaged students can be when given challenges and puzzles.

The first is a set of printable ‘cards’ with one half having either a God/Goddess associated with Ancient Egypt; the other half a sentence on their role etc– they can be used for matching pairs etc. (Answers provided!) Second is similar but set out as a set of dominoes to allow for greater variety and a degree of support.

A set of resources to develop knowledge and understanding of Roman Britain with a focus on developing chronological knowledge and understanding. There is a power point presentation with a range of significant developments/events from 43 to 410AD - run through version gives an indication of the passage of time. Three related activities develop this approach with tasks using the same developments/events -for matching pairs, ‘dominoes’ and identifying locations. In addition there is a set of word searches and quizzes combined to further develop knowledge and understanding of these events/developments (in various versions with differing levels of support). There is also a timeline based sequencing task featuring the same events. There are also map based tasks on Roman towns and roads (again with support versions) -that also have basic word searches as well. Finally there is a set of colouring pages with illustrations of Roman times (from 19th century).

A set of resources to develop and reinforce knowledge and understanding of Ancient Sumer, especially in terms of chronological knowledge and understanding. There is a power point presentation of a range of events from 5,000 to 1,760 BCE. - also a version that plays automatically to give a sense of the passing of time. Two related activities develop this approach with tasks using the same developments/events -for matching pairs, ‘dominoes’. In addition there is a set of three word searches and quizzes combined to further develop knowledge and understanding of these events/developments (in various versions with differing levels of support). There is also a timeline based sequencing task featuring the same events. A set of three crosswords on a range of Ancient Sumerian rulers, places, technologies etc (with support version). Also includes a set of colouring pages (from 19th century books)

A set of resources to develop knowledge and understanding of Anglo-Saxon era British history with a focus on developing chronological knowledge and understanding. There is a power point presentation with a range of significant developments/events from 449AD to 1066 AD - run through version gives an indication of the passage of time. Three related activities develop this approach with tasks using the same developments/events -for matching pairs, ‘dominoes’ and identifying time periods. In addition there is a set of five word searches and quizzes combined to further develop knowledge and understanding of these events/developments (in various versions with differing levels of support). There is also a timeline based sequencing task featuring the same events. Finally there is a set of colouring pages with illustrations of artefacts etc from the Anglo-Saxon (and Viking) period.

A simple sequencing activity to help develop chronological knowledge. There is a list of events with dates -but events are listed alphabetically- and a blank table to enter the information into (so students need to sequence the dates first). There is also a support version which has the dates in order so students need to find the corresponding event. The events are mostly those which feature in the linked resources on developing chronological understanding including the power point.

There are two sets of ‘cards’ to use for ‘calling’ -one with a sentence description and one with just the name. Ideal for use in the period leading up to the General Election as well as for citizenship and British values. There is a power point showing all the General elections with the resultant Prime Ministers since 1892 (and changes in PM post-election) -these also have a pie chart showing the number of seats won by the main parties. A power point presentation of a range of activities – such as sorting into order, matching pairs and listing PMs. A word document with the activities from the power point plus 2 word searches and a crossword (and a copy with the answers) *1892 was when Kier Hardie was the first ‘Labour’ MP elected

Information and comprehension tasks on a range of 12 Prime Ministers who in some way were a ‘first’ (or last in the case of Douglas Home!). There is a one page summary sheet with their image and ‘first’. There are two sheets with some outline information on each of the selected PMs- along with a set of comprehension tasks. These come in three formats: ‘5,4,3,2,1’ ; ‘True or False’ and simple questions (same information each time). There is also a crossword -and a support version with the first letter of the answer- and a word search. Ideal for this period leading up to the General Election, but also for developing knowledge and understanding of British political history.

This resource challenges students to think about what being British means, including being critical of aspects such as how democratic is Britain? (updated following the December 2019 election) In particular the resources help consideration of: Democracy and the rule of law Providing information on the development of democracy and the rule of law; Working co-operatively to solve puzzles and challenges is a method of developing team working and listening skills which supports democratic methods. Individual liberty and personal and social responsibility Reflecting on these topics and learning about how they have come about. Respect and tolerance Having opportunities to learn about how Britain has become a more tolerant and welcoming nation. For each aspect there is some information ��including that which is critical of common perceptions of the nation (especially in the past but also today as with gender inequality). There is a range of activities some of which help develop greater knowledge and understanding of modern Britain and others which require a co-operative problem solving approach which involves listening to others ideas and accepting different approaches as well as reflecting on their own values. The free sample resources has examples from each category. Updated to reflect changes to the Cabinet, summer 2019. There is a separate resource just on the theme of democracy updated to early 2024

The UK is one of the world’s few full democracies but how well does the current system reflect voting and society? This resource encourages students to consider a range of ways in which the UK falls short- including the gender make up of representatives and how election results do not reflect votes cast. Topics covered: What is democracy? The system in the UK Representative democracy? Do results reflect votes? Votes and results –by party Women in politics Ethnic minorities in politics ‘Fairer’ voting systems Local Authorities Who are the councillors? For each aspect there is some information –including that which is critical of common perceptions of the nation (especially in the past but also today as with gender inequality). Most of them also have a selection of discussion points to stimulate debate. This is a revised version of part of the British Values resource and is ideal for promoting discussion in citizenship or tutor time. It is particularly appropriate with a General Election in 2024- especially as young people are less likely to vote than older people. Provided in both word document and power point formats.
