What’s it for?
This activity set has been designed to give learners an opportunity to look more closely at a set of the first 100/200 high frequency words and practise seeing these words on sight while matching these words with images. This set focuses on x15 ‘colour names’ - all words included have a matching image.
This is a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently or those needing some individual 1:1 support.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in Year 1 who are learning/need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource is also suitable for older learners with additional learning needs.
How to use it?
An adult can pre-cut along dotted lines provided for the set of x15 words (including to separate words and images). These pieces can then be shuffled and placed face-up for learners to read and match.
Resource Details…
These words are all from the list of Y1 ‘common words’ to read and spell. Some are also from the from the first 100/200 high frequency word list. It is possible to ‘sound out’ ‘most’ of these words, however some are ‘tricky’. Words to sound out can be identified by a ‘white tick’. Tricky words (not to be sounded out) can be identified by a white ‘cross’.
In the ‘word box’ at the top-right there is a coloured ‘triangle’. The colour indicates which phonics phase each word fits in with. Pink triangles indicate that the words are from ‘phase 2’, purple triangles indicate that the words are from 'phase 3’ and turquoise triangles indicate that the words are from 'phase 5’. The ‘key’ at the top of each sheet also makes this colour-coded system clear.
Red letters indicate the tricky/irregular letters/sounds. It is possible to sound out and ‘work out’ some words which contain some red letters if the focus is placed on the black letters in those words which should be sounds learners know (according to which phonics-phase they are competent in).
Where letters are underlined - this indicates that the letters together/separate have one sound. ‘Tricky words’ are underlined as one word instead.
Each page is numbered e.g. ‘1 of 3’ - find page numbers on the lower right side of each sheet.
The dark grey box outline colour indicates that these words are all part of the ‘colour names’ set. Sets for 'nouns’ and ‘number names to 20’ are already available and other common/high frequency word sets are coming soon…

This resource has been designed for pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
Page 1 This page has been designed to be the ‘book’ itself. The top section is the front and back cover, the middle and lower section have been designed as the pages to go inside the book. Learners are to cut along ‘dotted’ lines on page 1 to create three separate strips - these are the ‘pages’ of the book. Learners then stack these three pages together - with the ‘All about me!’ cover positioned at the front and fold along the ‘dashed’ lines. Learners can write their name on the line provided on the front cover before continuing with making their mini-book.
Once this has been done learners can then stick information (see pages 2 and 3) on the front AND back of these pages to add more information to their ‘all about me’ mini-book. If learners wish to include even more information more than one copy of page 1 can be provided for learners to access - although they will only need one copy of the top section (the front and back cover of the book!)
Learners will each need a pencil, scissors and a glue stick. Adults may wish to ‘staple’ the spine of these mini-books together (along the ‘dashed lines’) once complete.
Pages 2 and 3. These pages have been designed to be cut out as individual squares and completed by learners before being stuck into the prepared mini-book. Learners can choose which ‘squares/pages’ to include in their mini book - there are several to choose from…

This resource has been designed as a ‘back to school’ getting to know each other acitivity and therefore is ideal for the start of the new term. It is also helpful for any new student who starts in the class at any point mid-term.
These sheets could make an interesting writing focused display for other learners in the school to better get to know their peers too!
Both sheets are in the same layout, however one has been designed to be more simple than the other
Simple Version
Learners complete the sentences by writing their own information on the lines provided. What’s included?
This download includes one simple, predictable alphabet rhyme for the letter ‘h’ - in colour AND black and white (so x2 sheets in total). This rhyme has been set out landscape orientation - the complete ‘alphabet set’ is available in my TES shop!
What’s it for?
This rhyme is part of an alphabet set (of the same layout) and has been designed for learners to practise reading simple words (images make noun-words clear) and each rhyme practises one phonic sound - this rhyme focuses on ‘h’.
How to use it?
Using a pointer (or pointy finger!) learners point to each word/sound as they say/sing it out loud, some rhymes are more ‘silly’ than others(!) In this rhyme the horses wear the hats!
This is a unique, fun and engaging way to practise reading and phonics that all learners will enjoy. These rhymes also provide a great opportunity to practise using one to one correspondence - an important early reading skill.

Suggestions
Learners might like to practise reading these on their own, in pairs or small groups or even as a class during a whole carpet session, reading/singing along together.
I recommend printing out the colour versions of these (the colours look so lovely!) and laminating each rhyme to help keep them in good condition. You may wish to introduce these rhymes alongside learning these sounds for the first time and have a set (e.g. of x6) of every rhyme printed out and laminated for groups to use as an extension/quiet activity. Or, these rhymes may be good to introduce later to recap on some sounds which may be proving to be more tricky to remember.
My classes of early years and year one children were really motivated to use these and very good at practising them quietly to themselves using ‘whispery voices’ (so cute!) I found that all learners really enjoyed using these with a ‘pointer’ which I had a pot of (pointers!) stored with the rhymes, ready to use.

This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
The layout includes x2 wheels, one for the ‘front’ (wheel 1) and one for the back - with the x2 sets of vowels on (wheel 2). Once assembled (according to instructions included on the pdf) the ‘CVC Phonics Wheel’ can be turned to reveal one vowel in the centre of the two consonants displayed/written on the front of the wheel. The wheel can be turned clockwise or anticlockwise, the direction doesn’t matter.
Some words will be ‘real’ e.g. den//hen/men/pen and some words will not be real (will be ‘nonsense’) words e.g. len/ren. Real/nonsense words made can be written on page 3. There is space for x10 real and x10 nonsense words to be written here and a clear space for learners to write their name (at the base of the sheet).
Suggestion
For older, more able learners this activity could be linked to looking up new words in the dictionary to find out if they are/are not real words and if they are ‘real’ words e.g. ‘fen’ find out what their meanings are (Fen is used to refer to an area of low, flat, wet land, especially in the east of England) - so now you know!

How to use this resource
An adult needs to cut out and make the three phonics dice - clear instructions are included. Each player will need one game card (and a pencil!) There are two game cards included on page 3 - these can be printed/photocopied as many times as needed and the sheet cut in half to separate the two game cards (one per player).
This game can be for one learner to play alone or for several learners to play together in a group (taking turns).
The game instructions are included on pages 1 and 3 of the download - I will also include them here:
How to play game
Each player takes turns to roll the three dice together.
Each player places the three dice next to each other, left to right - red, amber, green.
Player sounds out the graphemes to read the word.
If this is a ‘real’ word player writes it in the coloured boxes on their card (on the ‘left’ side). If this is a ‘nonsense’ word the player writes this word in the coloured boxes on their card (on the right side).
Play passes to next player.
If a player rolls the same combination as previously rolled they can have another turn.
First player to roll (read and write!) x5 real OR nonsense words wins!
There are various words which can be made using this combination of letters in the set order. Some ‘real word’ examples include sat/bat/hat/mat/pat/rat, pig/bill/hill/mill/pill, pull/bug/hug/mug/rug, sock/rock/hog, hen/men/pen/red/bell/sell. I hope you have fun finding them all - real AND nonsense!

How to use this resource
As all letter sounds for Phase 2 are included here all letters can be combined onto one ring as one set. I have included ‘covers’ for each individual set incase the preference is to split the sets. A ‘cover’ for ALL sounds is included on page 4.
Phonics fans can be used in a variety of situations including on-the-carpet questioning with the whole class/smaller groups where pupils can show their answers instead of speaking. Learners can use these phonics fans as a personal reference resource to cross-check the correct grapheme or orientation of individual letters if unsure when writing. Phonics fans can also be used for a variety of games and to involve learners during sound rhymes and songs. These fans are a great size to fit into a pocket or clip onto a lanyard to be accessed both inside the classroom and outdoors.

Suggestion
I recently purchased some brightly coloured plastic keyrings which can be easily opened by unclipping the plastic. These could be ideal should you wish learners to access the contents of the ring (e.g. to order the sounds) and come in a variety of colours. Alternatively I have found standard metal keyrings also work well as a more permanent ‘holder’ of the contents threaded onto the keyring.
I recommend that each letter is laminated before punching a hole and threading onto a keyring - this is included in the instructions on the pdf.

The resource explores the concept of ‘opposites’ through two pictures showing the same scene with x9 differences (between the pictures) to identify. These differences are all ‘opposites’. These opposites are - on/off, up/down, sit/stand, sunny/rainy, shut/open, dry/wet, above/below, alive/not alive and in front/behind.
Once learners identify a difference between the picture scenes they can circle these and find the matching label below to link the two opposite word labels.
Page 2 is exactly the same layout with the opposite differences identified in both picture scenes with a circle and word label to make these clear.

This word search has been designed for pupils in years one and two and maybe the early years, as well as students needing additional learning support.
This simple, clear resource has been carefully designed to encourage young learners with reading key words. Knowing these common colour names both reading them on-sight and learning the correct spellings will benefit both reading and writing. This word search makes the spellings clear, there are x16 words to find and as a fun extension this word search includes x15 of the colours to find within the word search (with the exception of the ‘colour version’ of the word ‘rainbow’ which is not hidden).
Resource layout
The word search letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid and featuring easy to read size 25 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font.
The common colour words have been organised into four groups of four, clearly showing all hidden colour words below the word search. As said, there are x16 words to find in total. These words are hidden horizontally (forwards and backwards), vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally (forwards AND backwards). Words to find are; red, orange, yellow, cream, green, turquoise, blue, pink, purple, brown, grey, black, white, silver, gold and rainbow.
Recommendations
I recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words as highlighters enable all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified. Some letters have been used more than once (for different words) so all letters need to remain visible (if words are instead ‘crossed out’ this makes the letters harder to read and identify). This word search may be printed and laminated to be reused.

Useful for…
I find word searches like this good way to motivate pupils to read words and while engaging in the activity learners are encouraged to focus on the spellings as they really think about the order of which letter follows which within each ‘people’ word especially as they try to track words spelt backwards or diagonally within the word search! This word search can make a good use of time as a follow on activity for early finishers, linking to learning about ‘nouns’ for example. Word searches can be an engaging homework task, useful in supporting reading, spelling and writing.
I hope this resource will be useful to range of educators including parents, support workers, additional and special needs assistants, tutors and teachers.

This simple, clear resource has been carefully designed to encourage young readers especially pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Knowing these number names (words) is also an important part of maths in these year groups as questions and information often includes the number name as the written word (e.g. ‘three’) instead of the more easily recognisable numeral (e.g. ‘3’).
Resource layout
The twenty number name words have been organised into four groups of five, clearly showing all hidden number words in order up to twenty. There are x20 words to find in total. These words are hidden horizontally (forwards and backwards) vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally (up and down - both directions). Directional arrows on the answer sheet (page 2) make it clear exactly where to look if learners get stuck.
The version of this word search which includes numerals is ideal for those learners either needing the additional support of having the numeral AND the number name shown together. For learners who would like an extra challenge, the numerals from 1 - 20 are all also hidden within the wordsearch. Once the learner has located each of these they could be circled on the wordsearch and ticked off in the box below. The numerals have been included in a variety of font styles to encourage learners to get used to recognising numerals written differently.
On the colour/black and white versions of the word search there is a space in the four boxes (under the wordsearch where the hidden words are displayed) for learners to write the numerals next to the number names themselves.
On all versions of this word search there is a space for learners to write their name (at the base of the sheet) and to record the number date (top, left).
