This resource includes 3 differentiated non-fiction comprehension booklets for year 2. Each booklet is all about what children could do to make their Mum happy on Mother’s Day. It is based on the KS1 SATs reading papers. Each booklet contains a title page followed by four pages of pictures and short written extracts to read and 2-3 questions per page. Answers are also included. There are a range of ‘what’ and ‘how’ questions, some multiple choice tick questions and some that require more detailed answers. The activity is also laid out in a similar way to the SATs booklets. There is a colour and black & white version of each booklet. (The preview pages show the title page and one of the comprehension pages from the colour and black & white middle ability booklets.) PDF file format.

This resource is designed to use with year 2 children in preparation for the SPaG SATs. The activity allows children to practise subordination and coordination, a topic which came up a number of times in recent SPaG papers and sample papers. There are 18 questions for the children to answer. They must read the sentence and tick the correct word to fill the gap. This is how the subordination and coordination questions were formatted in the SATs papers. The activity is differentiated 3 ways, with the higher ability using a wider range of words and the lower ability choosing from only ‘and’ ‘but’ and ‘or.’ Answers are included. PDF file format. Each practice paper contains 18 questions focussing on a range of punctuation . This includes commas, question marks, exclamation marks, full stops and apostrophes. This is a 5 lesson Literacy unit all about Edith Cavell. The plan is aimed at year 2 and gives details of the year 2 curriculum objectives covered. The children develop reading comprehension, writing, editing and SPaG skills during the unit. All five lessons include a SPaG starter which is always linked to Edith Cavell. The main activity in lesson 1 is a non-fiction reading comprehension, which helps children to learn about Edith. It is laid out in a SATs style format, containing similar questions to a SATs paper and is differentiated 3 ways. The main activity in lesson 2 is a newspaper comprehension, written from the point of view of a British reporter the day after Edith was shot. Again it contains SATs style questions and is differentiated 3 ways. Please note the 'Preview Page' shows the newspaper report with sections blacked out. Lesson 3 allows children to gather ideas through drama and written activities. Lessons 4 and 5 allow children to write and edit their own newspapers about Edith Cavell. This bundle contains 3 week-long literacy units aimed at year 2. The three units cover historical figures from the KS1 history curriculum: Florence Nightingale Mary Seacole Edith Cavell They could be used separately or in conjunction with each other to form a historical comparison. All three units follow a similar pattern. The first two lessons in each unit are comprehension lessons. The third lesson allows for vocabulary building through drama and written activities.
