Balanced and unbalanced forces (batman)

cut out the arrows attached to the worksheets and the arrows are different sizes each pupil can have a different stage of the batcycle in motion there mission is to, put the force arrows on and describe whether the batcycle forces are balanced or unbalanced in the box that says my ideas, can be easily differentiated by giving less able students the picture of a stopped batcycle and the more able ones a cycle that is accelerating

Building model atoms

To get the pupils to learn atomic structure we made models of atoms using sweets if they make them on paper with clean hands they can eat them afterwards. We used white and milk chocolate buttons as the protons and neutrons and martians as the electrons with strawberry bootlaces to show the outer elcetron shells, the pupils understood the concept so well we went on to building atoms of oxygen and berylium as well to discuss how the shells fill up, a picture of their models is included and then we evaluated their models and the effectiveness of the model using the sheet attached

The search for Immortality was key in alchemy and Henriettas cells are immortal she has an interesting story which raises several ethical questions. This is a sheet containing her story which could be turned into a card sort activity, more to follow

Family trees and evolution

(1)
I designed this as a interview lesson but it works as part of the OCR twenty first century science module on life on earth as well. you start with the pictures of a real family tree and look for similarities before moving on to look at darwins finches and his work and the development of phylogenetic trees. It's a good springboard into a discussion about how DNA evidence supports the theory of evolution and can then extend into darwins work, my extension sheet included has an excerpt from the origin of the species describing the finches

I have used the level 3 - 5 science APP statements to make an Xbox achievment assessment for the pupils called science live. It works like the achievements on xbox pupils get the black and white sheet for their books then get the coloured stickers when they unlock the achievement it is an easy skill tracker and really hooks the pupils in small prizes can be given for every 200 points unlocked to link in to your schools reward policy.
