History lesson on the rise of the Roman Empire. Students will look at the geography of Rome in relation to the previous empires covered: Egyptian and Greek. Students will be given the story of Rome’s foundation with the myth of Romulus and Remus. Students will then be asked to complete a missing words task on the Roman Empire. Students will be then asked to write a letter drawing on their previous knowledge of the Greek Empire. They are to summarise the good aspects of Greek life to the Romans to ensure that their culture is not destroyed and rebellion does not occur.

Students are then separated into 5 mixed ability teams and instructions are read out about the task ahead. Each team is to research a chosen individual, complete a worksheet (per student) and then organise themselves ready to present their key individual to the rest of the class in the form of a drama performance.

Students will then be presented with an ‘information explosion’ with limited instructions and lots of information on each table. Students will then complete a ‘progress’ and ‘held back’. Lesson on Egyptian society. Students start by discussing democracy in the UK. Students are then assigned a role within the Egyptian social pyramid (11 roles in all) and they are to go around the classroom and interact with other students as their character. Students will then complete the worksheet highlighting the responsibilities of each role, the benefits and the drawbacks. Students will then debate how Ancient Egypt might have been if democracy had been introduced but will argue from the point of their character.

A KS4 AQA History lesson on the failure of the war plans at the start of the First World War. Students will look at the early stages of the Schlieffen Plan which leads to the Battle of the Marne. Students will look at Belgian resistance here with a source analysis task. Students will then move on towards the origins of trench warfare with the race to the sea before looking at Russian involvement on Germany’s Eastern Front. This lesson ends with a source analysis question based on early Russian dominance against the Austro-Hungarians.
