Hi, I am a primary teacher in Scotland and currently I work with learners with severe and complex additional support needs in both the primary and secondary settings. I recognise the need for good quality resources, unfortunately these are not always available to suit the needs of my visual learners who require that extra support and those that I do find often need to be adapted to meet my learners needs. I hope that you find them as useful in your classrooms as I have found them in mine.

Cube Colour Pattern Flashcards

This is a great resource to put in pupil's individual TEACCH boxes or for independent tasks to consolidate matching, sequencing and following a pattern. The flashcards are clear and uncluttered for maximum pupil focus. They can be used with threading cubes to also promote and encourage fine motor skills.

Colour Match Board (word to colour)

(1)
This resources can be used for multiple purposes. Each board has 8 common colour dots (red, blue, purple, yellow, pink, green, orange & brown) that pupils match up the corresponding colour word to, for differentiation there are 2 sets of words one in matching colours and one in black text. I use this resource with pupils in their individual work trays and TEACCH boxes to encourage independent work. It consolidates word recognition with initial support from coloured text and can be used to reinforce colour recognition. I use it to introduce the Makaton signs.

These differentiated counting cards can be used in work boxes and independent numeracy centres to encourage and promote number sequencing skills and one to one counting skills. I use them with pupils with severe and complex learning needs as structured activity boxes using numbered pegs to match to the circles initially the ones with the corresponding numbers on them then moving onto the blank circles. There are also cards with alternating coloured circles to introduce the concept of odd and even numbers.

This clearly laid out and visual addition board will support pupils who find the task of addition challenging. There is space under the addition sum for pupils to place/use concrete items. I have included number tiles for pupils who also find writing challenging. It is especially supportive to pupils with additional support needs.

What Am I Looking For? Behaviour Flashcards

These interactive and visually stimulating flashcards can be used to remind pupils of appropriate classroom behaviour. The visuals used are PCS Boardmaker symbols used with permission from Mayer Johnson. Professionals working with ASN pupils will be familiar with these clear and easy recognisable images that support pupil communication and comprehension. I use these flashcards at the start of the lesson to remind pupils of the core skills that I will be looking for i.e. good listening, good sitting etc. I then have them on the board or wall to remind pupils throughout the activity. I have enlarged them as a permanent wall display and also condensed them and put them on a keyring for some pupils to carry with them throughout the school day. I have also included a checklist for more able pupils to self/partner evaluate class behaviours. The Picture Communication Symbols ©1981–2010 by Mayer-Johnson LLC. All Rights Reserved Worldwide. This resource can be used in a variety of ways, as a visual prompt to remind young children or those with additional support needs of the correct sequence when washing their hands correctly. It can also be used when introducing sequencing and ordinal numbers by using a routine learners are familiar with. In my class I have the chart displayed by the sink and the flashcards on a keyring i flip over as a visual prompt. You could also reduce the size by printing 2 to a page and attach to a keyring for taking out and about with you.

Symbolic communication/news boards

This differentiated resource has been created for learners with communication or learning difficulties to enable them to share their news with their peers. I use this every morning in my class with learners who have a range of ASD and learning difficulties as a settling task sorting the day of the week, the weather and how they are feeling. They then choose from a range of symbols to represent what they either did the night before or are going to do that day. It is a great supporting tool to encourage and promote communication, talking and listening skills. There are 3 differentiated boards that range from symbol matching, emergent writing and independent writing. In my class I found it most useful to bind the symbols and boards so that they open like a book, I copied the symbols and cut them before mounting them onto the base board with Velcro, pupils can then move them onto their own board.

First & Then visual timetable board with timetable symbols

This is an extremely useful resource to aid pupils with ASD to help them sequence their daily routine. I use it in my class to smooth transitions between subjects and locations and it reduces stress levels in pupils who find these transitions challenging. It can begin with just 1 symbol before building up to 5 so pupils can structure their tasks, morning routine or day. The symbols are Mayer Johnston images found within the popular Boardmaker software and reproduce with permission so they will correspond to any other resources already in place using this software.

This pack contains a variety of visual support and activities to promote good oral hygiene routines with children and adults who find sequencing challenging. The pack includes a poster to keep by the sink, a checklist, flashcards, a mini flip chart, a colour in page and a cut and stick sequencing worksheet. I get the kids in class to use an old toothbrush to brush the paint onto the tooth colour in worksheet to encourage brushing in circular motions and ensure the whole tooth is cleaned. I laminate the mini flip chart and add double sided Velcro to the bottom of each flap that the kids close over when they have completed each step successfully. Visual weekly planning chart for home & school

This weekly chart is excellent for supporting children and adults with communication difficulties and those who find structuring their day and week challenging, especially when there is a change to their normal routine. The pack includes 3 A3 sized charts (can be printed out on A4 via your print settings at home/school) in grey, pink and blue and also over 70 different symbols cards that are 4cmx4cm using the well known images from Mayer Johnston’s Boardmaker Studio. All you have to do is cut and laminate the small cards and they will last for a long time, no problems if one gets lost you can simply reprint. I use double sided velcro on mine, but blue/white tac works just as well. I use this in my class and have given parents a copy to use at home so we provide consistent, I also use this at my daily communication group for pupils to share their news and any changes to our normal routine so everyone can be prepared.
