French Circling Activity - French pronouns and verbs in 3 tenses
Research reveals that language learners need MANY repetitions of grammatical structures in order to truly acquire them. By using the circling method, familiarity with the word or phrase is done through repetitive questions circling around the target language. This particular activity is different to many French TPRS circling activities because it doesn’t tell a story. Instead, this activity focuses on French verbs, the pronouns LE - LA - LES - LUI - LEUR - Y - EN, possessive adjectives, and other less frequently used words that students will acquire through meaningful repetition. Each series of sentences is spoken in the present, passé composé, and futur proche tenses, and different forms of negation are included. Read on to see how you can easily differentiate this activity by using video, audio, and practice cards.
Here’s how it works:
I speak a sentence: Le chien ne veut pas de ses croquettes. Il n’en veut pas.
I tell students to restate the sentence using a different subject pronoun: Les chats
Students restate the sentence making necessary changes: Les chats ne veulent pas de leurs croquettes. Les chats n’en veulent pas.
Included:
Full length downloadable video circling activity - 362 slides - 53 minutes
Practice cards for online use to work on reading and writing - 360 cards
Step 1: Watch the video lesson / activity to learn about the circling method. Students will quickly catch on, and will truly need to concentrate so that they can make the necessary changes in their sentences. Do your students ever tell you that they can understand what’s being said, but can’t think fast enough to make the necessary changes when responding? That’s exactly why you should have them try out circling!
Step 2: Use the set of cards to practice reading and writing. Read the cards that I have spoken in step 1, and have students take the time to write their responses before looking at the answer cards. As the cards are not numbered, I encourage you to download them and use them online rather than printing.

At the end of the week they turn in the folders. On Monday, start over with a new theme.

How the program works:
Lundi: Je dessine - Students get a drawing page with a writing prompt at the top. This will have them think about the writing theme for the week. It is the 1st prewriting assignment. Kids love drawing, and the pictures they draw will serve as inspiration!
Mardi: Mon livret de vocabulaire - Each student gets a booklet to explore vocabulary related to the theme. The front page shows the writing prompt of the week and an image. The 2nd has over 80 frequently used French words. Page 3 lists 12 words that go along with the theme, and the back page has space for ten words that students either think of on their own or look up in the dictionary. The booklet is a one page printable that you can fold in advance or have students do it. They write their name on the front cover and they can color it.
Mercredi: Vocabulaire - Go back to vocabulary booklets from Tuesday and choose 10 words to include in the rough draft. Words they choose are a combination of words they have chosen and themed vocabulary already written in the booklet. They write down the chosen words on their vocabulary page that says: *Mots de vocabulaire utiles: J’utiliserai ces mots dans mon paragraphe. *
Jeudi: Mon brouillon - Write a rough draft of their paragraph using vocabulary words selected on Wednesday. The brouillon page has a 5 point checklist to evaluate their work before writing the final copy on Friday. This motivates students to look over their work and make corrections.
Vendredi: Ma copie propre - The 5th step in this program is writing the final copy. Students should feel very confident in writing about this theme. The top of the final page has the writing prompt and question words to consider while writing: qui - quoi - quand - où - pourquoi - comment
