Inspired by the lovely @teachingintechnicolour, we read Ahmed and the Feather girl which lead to a discussion about children’s rights. We explored the rights that had been impacted during lockdown in Scotland and how that could influence our mental wellbeing.
Later I taught the children a variety of watercolour techniques and they used them to decorate a feather. Thia was a great opportunity to get to know them better. Abstract art is great at the beginning of the year as it lets children grow in confidence in their ability and not compare their work.
My stagey and I created installation you can see in the picture in our corridor and every child enjoyed getting a photo in front of the wings. Great first week back activity.

An easy step-by-step guide on how to create a silhouette image from a photo on PowerPoint. This slideshow gives you pictorial guides as well as instructions so it is perfect for use with children aged 6+. The purpose of this lesson is to explore the features of software.
I used this in my classroom to create beautiful silhouette photos of my pupils to accompany their writing on a display. The children were so proud that they had made the silhouettes themselves and enjoyed trying to guess who was who in each picture.
I have left this PowerPoint editable so that you can add your own instructions.
If you manage to use this in your class, I would love if you could leave a review or tag me @TheMindBlossoms on Instragram.

Simply print and laminate to set up Blurt Poms in your classroom to encourage your chatty class to settle.
After spotting the original idea of ‘Blurt Beans’ on Pinterest when I was looking for inspiration for quietening a very chatty class, I decided it to put my own spin on it as I didn’t like the thought of having beans lying about my class. I came up with the idea of Blurt Poms. I’m all for kids talking and discussing in class, but this is more about the children learning when it is time to listen to others.
Essentially, there are two glass jars and some pom poms. I got my little pom-poms are from Amazon where you can get a pack of 4000 for £6 and glass jars from IKEA. The children start the day with 5 pom-poms and if they are being too loud or interrupting someone else in the classroom, they lose a pom! It goes back into the teachers jar (which sits on my desk) as a visual for how many poms they could have collected if they hadn’t been distracting in class.
The second jar belongs to the children and at the end of the day they empty their pom-poms into the jar and watch them slowly build up. I have marked the jar so that the children are working towards smaller prizes rather than the whole jar. We all decided on a prize on the first day of school.
The kids are so on-board with their poms and it really helped set the standard for my new class. They will even point out to one another when they are not showing respect when someone else is speaking or they are being too loud in a group…I barely need to take any poms off anyone now! Good start of the year strategy. It was so effective I didn’t have to run it any longer than October from August.
FREE Printable resource that you can use to gift a mechanical pencil or pen to your new class.
You can add your own Bitmoji to make it more personalised.
An informational Google Slides all about Glasgow-based artist Neil Slorance to celebrate National Cartoonist Day. Can be linked straight into Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams.
This fun grammar game incorporates the children’s (and everyone’s) love of PASTA into Literary!
Macaroni Commas is an engaging game that you can bring out again and again to help pupils to revise their punctuation skills. Simply print the cards out on any colour you like, with the questions on one side and the answers on the other. Provide some macaroni to your pupils and let them guess where the missing comma should be placed in the sentence. This activity can be self-assessed making it a great fast finisher or challenge. I have used this resource from P4 - P7 and it has always been a hit!
TIP - I find it better to print the questions and answers on different cards so that children can look at the answer without flipping their current card over. For example: Question 1’s answer will be on the back of Question 2’s card.
A great Health and Wellbeing lesson to focus children on thinking positively about themselves and others as they return back to school after lockdown. This lesson focuses on the positive characteristics that we all possess and how we can use these to build and maintain good relationships with other people. It is a great way to open discussion about inclusion and diversity.
This complete lesson includes:
Watercolour PowerPoint
Template for Wheels.
If you know what makes you special, then you will feel good about yourself and this will radiate to others around you! You are building a ‘positive mental attitude’.
