I have been designing resources for many years as I worked with preschool and primary age youngsters with delayed or impaired speech and language skills. The resources using symbols are free. My latest resources which I have illustrated are extra tasks based on Marion Blank's Language Levels (previous ones have been free). They can be used with groups of mixed language ability and are reasonably priced.

Maths concept words and phrases illustrated

(34)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. These pages show some of the words that underpin talking about quantity, position, comparing, placing, arranging and so on. They all need to be practised with many different objects to ensure generalisation. Remember to stress first in a row is always on the left. This is critical to the understanding of instructions in maths and other areas. (First in the queue, however, depends on which way the queue is going. It's hard talking maths words!) Index in sheet order and alphabetical order.

Numicon shaped price tags for shopping -Widgit CIP

(9)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Print single-sided on A4 card. Do not reduce the size of the page or the price tags will not match Numicon pieces. See guide notes for ideas for use. Basically these price tags are for (a) making it clear whether the price has been covered by the 'money' tendered and (b) whether any change is owing. The concept of 'difference' in sums in words or shopping is often a real stumbling block for many children.

(3)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Bonds to 5 (and subtract from 5). Three similar stories and worksheets. Print the three stories 2-up on A4 paper. Print the worksheets on A4 paper. Suggestions on the worksheet pages use a very visual ‘take-away’ method first (by destroying the correct number of images). Then, the child has to say how many are needed to replace them to get back to 5 before the next sum, and cut the correct number of images for the replacement. Sums are also presented in written form.

The multi-page files can be printed 2-up. Could be used for EAL as well.

(3)
Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. See Guide for suggestions. Coin cards for the 13/30 up to 19/90 (-teen and -ty numbers) have been included with two different fonts for the numbers. Some children are very distracted by the additions to 1 in Comic Sans, others confuse the 'p' with 9 - especially those who aren't working L-R consistently. The second set is in Rage Italic font which has numbers more like hand-written ones.
